“We’ve had another message,” Hope said, leaning in so nobody around them, even Jennifer, could hear. “Five bells rung high; one will die.”

“What!” True shrieked, gaining attention from those around her.

Faith grabbed hold of True’s arm and yanked her closer. “Nix the shrill shrewness.”

“Shrewness is not a word,” True replied.

“Tis now,” Faith said.

True looked at Hope. “What the hell does that mean?”

“I’m guessing, pretty much what it says on the tin,” Hope replied.

“And it came from the ghost?” True hissed in a low whisper.

“Well, I didn’t suddenly become psychic, and if I had, would I be talking in riddles?” Hope replied.

“Why didn’t it say that the other night?” True demanded.

“Why are you asking me that?” Hope replied. “Go ask your friend in the guesthouse.”

“He’s not my friend!” True said, pulling her head back as her eyebrows hitched towards her hairline.

“We all know you’ve got a little thing for the ghost,” Faith said, teasing. “But does the alpha know that?”

“Oh, good lord,” True said, rolling her eyes and folding her arms defensively.

“See, classic defence posturing,” Faith said.

True slowly turned her head to eye her sister. “You’re the one who wanted this whole thing to be a …thing.”

“You’re the one who accepted the challenge by getting mated,” Faith tossed back.

“Sisters!” Hope said, bringing their attention back to her. “Can we concentrate on what’s important?”

Faith shrugged. “You mean the whole one-will-die thing?”

“Yeah!” Hope said with a dollop of disbelief.

Faith hummed. “Sure, I guess that’s where we should concentrate.”

“Ya think?” True said with accusation filling her tone.

“Not according to you, I don’t,” Faith replied.

“Hey!” Evie hissed. “Humans have ears.”

True grimaced long and hard. “Fine, let’s take this to the kitchen!”

“I don’t wanna go to the kitchen; I wanna watch the moon,” Jennifer said.

Evie looked lost. “I’ll stay.”

“We shall report back,” Hope said. “Sisters, the kitchen!”

Faith motioned for True to go first. “After you, challenge accepted, next level, girl.”

True bit down on the urge to hit Faith with a big old zap for satisfaction, but instead, she used her magic to make her sister trip over her own feet and smiled at a small shriek that came from behind her.
