When the ghost lifted a hand and pointed to the window, Nana turned in that direction and noted that the eclipse had started. “Eclipse?”

“Five bells rung high; time for one to die,” he said.

Nana snapped to attention. “You didn’t say that before?” she hissed, eyeing the man with disdain. “Who’s going to die?” she demanded.

When the ghost shrugged, Nana grumbled a curse or two under her breath. “Don’t you go anywhere!” she snapped, rushing for the backdoor. Then she turned on an afterthought. “Unless you want to go say hello to the shifter upstairs.”

“How’s it going in here?” Hope asked, walking into the kitchen and noting a hive of activity as Evie and Dani worked in harmony.

“If eating were an Olympic sport, they’ve got it covered,” Dani said, dropping another basket of freshly cut chips into the hot boil. “Is the whole pack out there?”

“That’s not shifters; that’s tourists, standing room only, and on the beach. We even got Amy to set up some impromptu table and chairs we found the other day in the stockroom, and the shifters haven’t turned up yet.” Hope replied.

“I don’t know if they will,” Evie said. “Who knows what an eclipse does to a shifter?”

“They do,” Evie said, shrugging. “I guess.”

“They’re not werewolves; they can control their shift,” Hope said. “Can’t they?”

Nana entered the room on rushed feet and stopped to catch her breath. “Five bells rung high; one will die,” she said fast and gasped in more air.

“Huh?” Hope asked.

Nana hooked a thumb over her shoulder. “Ghost!”

“He said that?” Evie asked. “Where’s Jennifer?” She panicked, heading for the door.

Dani panicked too. “I can’t leave the oil!” she said, caught between a rock and a hard place.

“It’s okay,” Hope said. “Just stay and do what you’re doing, we’ll go. Nana stay!”

“Not a dog,” Nana said but was grateful to be able to catch her breath as Evie and Hope rushed from the room. “Witching is a young woman’s game at times.”

“But the elders do it better,” Dani reminded her, turning to shake the chips in the basket. “Five bells rung high?”

“Is there a church?” Nana asked.

“Oh, don’t know,” Dani said, shrugging. “Would that mean five o’clock?”

“If it’s a church,” Nana said. “Probably.”

Evie rushed up behind Jennifer, slapped her hands on the child’s shoulders, and pulled her back into her embrace. “Stick to me like glue,” she said.

“She’s with me,” Faith said. “She’s fine.”

“Even though Faith should be working, not watching,” True said, lifting her chin and offering her sister a knowing smile.

“It’s a break,” Faith said. “Besides, you’re standing here.”

“I just got back here after doing the rounds,” True said.

Faith shrugged. “I didn’t notice your absence.”

“Gee, thanks,” True said, eyeing Evie. “What’s up?”
