“I know. That’s what Callie said. The thing was, I was concerned what with the other things that have been happening with the fire and the powder.” Avery took a sip of her wine. “There was something else. On its own I thought nothing of it but with the notes.

“Go on. Whatever it is, I’m here. I don’t want you scared.”

“This pregnant woman came up at the end as we were packing up. She asked if our products were safe for pregnant women.”

I shook my head guessing what was coming next.

“What did the woman look like?”

“Blonde and well dressed and I would say she was about six months along, but I’m not very good at guessing that kind of thing. Why do you ask?”

I was sure it was Gill Howard. The description fit. It was just too coincidental not to be. I had a choice to make. Say nothing and pretend it was probably just some crackpot or tell the truth. There was no way I was going to mess up what I had with Avery, so I would tell her and take the consequences. If I didn’t, and she found out anyway, we would be over.

“If it’s who I think it is her name is Gill. We had a brief fling a while back, and she says the baby is mine.”

Avery’s eyes went wide. “Wow. I was not expecting that. Is it yours?”

“It was just a couple of times we got together, and then I heard nothing till about six weeks ago. It was just before I went to Australia. I sent her a message saying I would pay for her medical needs but wanted to wait for a paternity test. I used precautions with her.”

“What was her response to that?”

“She pretty much told me to drop dead. She could be a bit wild. That was why we got on, but I don’t think she would do anything like the fire or powder. The notes on the other hand I can see. I am so sorry this happened to you.”

“I’m glad you told me. You did the right thing as far as I’m concerned. You have offered to help. If I was in your position, I would have done the same.”

“So, you are still okay with us?”

“Yes. But I’d still like to know who did start the fire. Is there any news from the police?”

“No, but Drake is still looking into it. The reason I had to go to the other side of the world and disappear was because I punched a guy who was having a go at his wife. He was a big name here. I still think he is the one behind the threats but can’t prove it.”

“Whatever happens we will go through it together. When you were gone, I accepted one thing. I think I’m falling for you.”

I kissed her, picked her up, and swung her around.

“I’ve been falling for you since you fell in my pool in Queensland. I thought I had missed my chance. I’m not going to let you slip through my fingers again.”

“Now, I thought someone was asking me to dinner.”

The food was wonderful and the night of making love even better. Life was going to be okay for once.

It was the best thing in the world to wake up next to Avery. She was naked, and I was hard, and she turned over and smiled at me, and we made love again. The car would be picking us up soon to take us shopping. I wanted Avery to have whatever she wanted.

Spending time with her trying on dresses made me smile. I didn’t do stuff like this, but if it brought her joy, it made me happy. She finally came out in a beautiful red dress. It fit her hourglass shape beautifully and reminded me of something from the forties.

“I love it,” I said, and she gave me a thumbs up and grinned.

When she came back out it was all wrapped and paid for.

“I think we should go and get ice cream.”

“I am up for that. What’s your favorite flavor? Mine is banana caramel,” she asked.

“Licorice.”

“That’s just weird.” She laughed at me.

“Don’t knock it till you try it.”
