I opened the box and read the first few. Most were because I love your stuff. A couple took me aback.

‘Can you get Flynn to kiss me?’

‘Another said I want Flynn to bite me.’

I shook my head as I read the ages of both entries. They were sixteen, and I would guess they were friends. I think it must have been the two giggling ones in the front row. The next few entries were promising, and I put them aside. The next five entries were folded together so I spread them out. Then a chill went over me. They all said the same thing; ‘he is mine’.

“Are you okay, Avery?” Callie asked. You have gone pale.” Then Callie peered down at the pieces of paper.

“The writing is all the same. Look, I would say it’s just a sick joke. When I first started seeing Declan, girls would ask if they could have his baby. I still get the odd message telling me to leave him. There are some crazies out there.”

“I suppose you are right. It’s just with the fire and everything. Do you think I should tell Flynn?”

“I would wait until they get back in a few days. Maybe by then, he might have some more news about the fire.”

“You’re probably right.” I still felt an unease as my stomach turned over. I would keep the pieces of paper and show Flynn when he got back. For now, we had to go to work and do another presentation and hope I did not have to fend off fans, paparazzi, and reporters again. Thank goodness it was the last one.

TWENTY-FOUR

FLYNN

The week in Pine Creek had gone well, and I had been able to catch up with the Connor family and visit some local breweries. The cider they made up here was top-class as well. Declan’s house was amazing that he had built. I would not go that far myself but would not mind a small place here away from the big city. LA was so intense, and everything was about acting all the time. Here you could just relax.

Declan had given some land over for tiny houses for the homeless, and we had even helped out for a morning. The locals wanted us to come back for a money raiser at the local rodeo. They even asked if I would like to be auctioned off for a day with a star. I politely declined their offer.

I was booked on the five o’clock flight and wanted to take Avery out to dinner and spend a night at a hotel where our noise would not bother Declan and his family. I hadn’t pushed her about Ireland, but she seemed a bit distant the last time we talked. Something was on her mind. I just hoped she still wanted us to be together.

When I turned up with Declan at his house, I need not have worried as she limped across and hugged me tightly.

“It’s so good to feel your body. That was a long week,” I said as we came apart.

“For me too. Now, where are we going? You said you had a surprise and I have an overnight bag packed.”

“We are staying at the Chateau and having a meal in our room and then a dip in the pool and a wonderful night of sex.”

“Sounds terrific.”

I chatted about Pine Creek and the shoot as we drove, but Avery still seemed quiet. Once in our room, I would see what she was worried about. We booked in and headed up to the suite full of old-world elegance. I opened the wine, poured her a glass, and sat down on the balcony beside her as we looked out over the vista.

“Okay. You have been unusually quiet for you and have not told me about your week and work. It’s either that or you are going to break it to me now, you’re not going to Ireland.”

“I’m sorry, and you are right and wrong. I am willing to go to Ireland with you. I can’t wait to be honest.”

“It’s work then?” I was relieved but concerned at the same time.

“We had a presentation while you were away where there was a reporter and paparazzi. He asked if I had started the fire.”

“What the fuck? Honestly, some of them will say anything to try to get a story.” I hugged her.

“He also asked if I was pregnant. I didn’t reply, and Patrick and the security saw them off. He was so good.”

“I’m sensing there was something else.”

“We are running a competition and people put their entry in a box.”

Avery pulled out a pile of notes from her purse. They all said the same thing; ‘he is mine’.

“It’s just some idiot. I get crap sometimes from people that makes no sense at all.”
