“Yes, the church parsonage. The assistant pastor, Kyle, told me I can stay for as long as I need. In the meantime, I’m just gonna keep taking care of my dad, helping him in rehab and looking for a house here in Austin.”

“Does it feel strange to be back?”

“I thought it would but it hasn’t at all. It’s really kinda nice seeing my old stomping ground again and people I’ve known my whole life. Hang on a sec. Someone just rang the doorbell.”

“Okay.”

When I looked through peephole, I smiled and then asked myself why I was happy to see Graham standing on the other side of the door. I didn’t know why other than I just was. Maybe it was the familiarity of him, the comfort that he brought and just his easygoing company.

“Melissa, I’ll call you back later if that’s all right.”

“Of course. Is everything okay, though?”

“Yeah.”

“Who was at the door?”

“Um, Graham. He’s still there. I haven’t answered it yet.”

“Should I be concerned?”

“About what?”

“You and him.”

“What about us?”

“I didn’t say anything to you at the time but I did notice a little flicker of attraction between you and Graham when he came to see your dad at the hospital.”

“Melissa, there’s nothing there. We are friends now and I’m thankful that we can be. We have a long history together.”

“Okay then. You better call me later tonight with a full report.”

I chuckled. “Yes, ma’am.”

As soon as she hung up, I opened my dad’s front door and Graham smiled at me.

“Hi,” I said, smiling back.

“Hi.”

“How are you?”

“I’m good. Just thought I’d stop by to see if you need anything.”

“I don’t believe I need a thing. I’ve been to the grocery store again, the pharmacy, and even stopped by Home Depot to pick up a mum.”

“Yeah, I see it here on the front porch. The burgundy ones are still your favorite, huh?”

I smiled again. “Yes, they are.”

“How are you holding up with everything?”

“I’m doing okay. Just so busy and really hoping my house in Dallas sells soon. Sorry, I’m being rude,” I said, stepping back from the doorway. “Come on in.”

“You don’t mind?”

“Not at all. I know you.”
