Graham glanced down at my lips and then nodded. “I know you too.”

After coming inside the parsonage, I offered him something to drink and he asked me what I had. As we were walking into the kitchen, I rambled off the list.

“There’s orange juice, milk, Dr. Pepper, and a bottle of Pinot Grigio in the fridge. Oh, and I have some Hendricks in the cabinet. Would any of that interest you?”

Graham’s green eyes danced across my face. “So you’re still a fan of gin.”

“Always. How about you?”

“Always.”

“It’s after five o’clock, so would you like to enjoy some now? I have tonic water and limes too.”

“Of course you do. And sure, I’ll have a Hendricks and tonic with extra lime—with you. I’m happy to, but please allow me to make our drinks. It’ll be like old times.”

“Fun times.”

“Yes. Very fun times.”

While Graham was making our drinks, we continued catching up about all that’d been going on in his life and mine. Our conversation carried over into my dad’s living room and after having two more gin and tonics with me, the expression on Graham’s face grew serious. Then he took my hand into his. I looked down at what he was doing and then met his gaze again.

“Are you okay with me doing this?” he asked.

I paused and then nodded yes. “It feels really nice.”

“I appreciate you keeping me up-to-date on how your dad is doing.”

“You’re welcome. I know you’ve always cared about him just like he’s always cared about you.”

“I do care about him. I care about you too. I’ve never stopped caring about you, Stevie.”

“I’ve never stopped caring about you either. We’ve known each other for so long and have been through so much.”

“Yes, we have.”

“Time is a funny thing.”

“How so?”

“How it changes your perspective.”

“In general or are you talking about something specific?”

“Specific.”

“Okay.”

I looked down at my hand still in Graham’s, took a deep breath, and then said, “My perspective on extramarital affairs has changed. I don’t view them as black and white anymore.”

“Are you sure you wanna talk about this with me? I don’t want you to get upset.”

“I’m sure. I need to talk to you about it.”

“Then I’m right here for you.”

“It may be the Hendricks I’ve had that’s giving me the courage to go here with you, but oh well.”

“I’ve never known you to be short on courage, Stevie.”
