CHAPTER19

Monroe

My prom dressis emerald green satin with gold accents covering the bodice and hem. My long brown hair is in tame curls as gold jewelry decorates my ears, wrists, and fingers. The top of my dress stops under my breasts, showing off my stomach, and the skirt is satin with tulle underneath it. Easton wears a black tux with a green bow tie matching my dress. His brown hair is swept back, and he looks sinfully delicious. And I owe him because he could have gone with any girl, but he agreed to go with me. Plus, Nixon wasn’t allowing anyone else to take me. Greedy ass.

Easton dances dramatically on the dance floor with me in tow as I laugh the whole time. Not a terrible dancer but when he breaks out dancing like a fool to “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars, Idie when he mimics Bruno Mars’s footwork.

Then it switches to a slow song and I wrap my arms around his strong neck. Nixon may have been my best friend once, but Easton is my person. The little brother I never asked for. I love him so much. “Lie to Me” by 5 Seconds of Summercomes on; it’s as if Nixon and I have finally found our theme song. He has been spending so much time with Holly, I hadn’t talked to him in weeks. He said we needed to take a break until the whole ordeal is over. It seems like a breakup and hurts just as bad. Almost like we were never anything at all. He plays his role so well. Never any stolen glances, no texts, no contact. It hurts because it seems as if everything I’m feeling, the hurt, the longing, is nonexistent to him. While it drowns me from the inside out every second we are apart.

I watch him hold Holly until his eyes flick open. Our eyes meet and the air simmers, growing dense under the weight of our hearts. We watch one another as we dance in others’ arms. The stare, the song, it all becomes too much. “Hey, East, I need to go to the bathroom. I’ll be back.” I break away from him, moving across the room.

Nixon

“Hey, babe, I need to use the restroom. I'll be right back.” I kiss Holly's cheek, chasing after Monroe. When I break into the hallway, I see a sliver of her dress go around the corner.

Confused as to why Monroe wasn’t on the track team—because she obviously could move fast—I rush down the hallway, grabbing her hand and pulling her into a hotel conference room. I push her up against the wall, capturing her lips. I flick my tongue against hers as her hands tangle into my hair. The desire, the pull between us, is raw, desperate, almost like if we let go, we may lose one another. She pulls me closer, her grip tightening as I roll our lips together, deepening our kiss. Our teeth clash as I roam her body with my hands, memorizing every curve of soft skin I can touch. It has been weeks since I last touched her. “You’ll always be my biggest weakness,” I growl into her mouth, savagely attacking her lips again.

She whimpers when I trail my lips down her neck, biting over her erratic heartbeat. I’m one second away from lifting her skirt and taking her right there and then, when I hear a slow clap. Holly stands, leaned up against the door in her silky gold dress. Her smile is too big, her eyes murderous. “Fuck,” I whisper. Holly pulls out a gun, the metal glinting off the lights. “Whoa, babe!” I throw my hands up.

“Don’t you babe me!”she screams, tilting her head to the side. Gun aimed at my chest. “I was willing to spare you, Nixon, but then you chose her.” Holly’s icy glare meets Monroe. “I’m no one’s second best.”

I turn my back on Holly to check on Monroe. Her eyes are wide as she stares over my shoulder. “Ma fille…” I whisper, searching her face, my hands roaming up and down her arms.

“I hope you two are happy in hell together.” Holly’s sinister voice laced with hatred doesn’t register.

A bullet rips through me and I watch in horror as Monroe’s stomach turns red. She looks up at me in shock, eyes wide as she crumples into me. “No!” I roar, turning around to tackle Holly, but she’s gone. I reach into my phone to dial 911.

“Operator, what’s your emergency?”

I go to speak but everything turns hazy as I clutch onto Monroe tighter and hit the ground. Her closed eyes are the last thing I see before everything goes black.
