CHAPTER20

Nixon

When I wake,my face is staring back at me. “Everett?” I croak, and then I go into panic mode as I remember the past events. “Monroe!” I try getting up, but Everett pushes me back down.

“Is fine,” he says calmly, looking me over. His blue eyes are sad. “I felt it,” he whispers, and he rubs his stomach. “I felt your pain. I was so scared, I thought…” He chokes up. “I thought you were gone.” He rests his forehead on mine, only pulling back when my mom and Aunt Eliza shove him out of the way, crawling to each side of me, fussing over me and kissing every inch of my face.

“My baby boy,” my mom sobs, cupping my face.

“Don’t you ever scare us like that again, Nixon Jacobs Masterson,” my aunt whispers. “You’re my baby too. When you were born, Everett was always so fussy. Your mom was constantly holding him, and I got to hold you. You were my first baby, and when I thought you were gone…” She presses a hand to her heart, squeezing her eyes shut. When they open, she is crying. My aunt never cries. “Don’t you do that to us again.” She kisses my head.

I squeeze my mom’s and aunt’s hands. Most thought they were twins, but Eliza is older. And like Everett and I, their eyes are different colors.

All the moms are in the room now, barking orders at nurses, and I roll my eyes.

“For the record,” my dad says, squeezing my ankle, “I knew you wouldn’t die.” He smiles at me, and I notice the redness around his eyes.

“How’s Monroe?” I look at Jessica. They all go silent.

“She hasn’t woken up yet, baby.” My mom brushes my hair back and I squeeze my eyes shut.

Monroe

“You want to tell me why she’s not waking up?” Maddox barks.

“Someone better wake my niece up, right fucking now,” Vincent grunts, the lethal whip of his voice chilling the air.

“Her body has to heal, you know this,” Jackson protests.

“Why don’t you all shut the fuck up? That’s my little girl in that bed, not yours,” my dad says calmly.

I hear a round of scoffing coming from my uncles. Opening my eyes, the light is bright, and I groan. “Turn it off.”

I hearfeet shuffle and a click. When I open my eyes again, four pairs of eyes are peering down at me. Two blue, one hazel, and one almost black. I blink at them as they stare at me.

“Thank fuck,” Maddox whispers, pressing a kiss to my head.

My dad sighs, resting his head on my arm.

Mom pushes them all out of the way. “Oh, thank God,” she says, sobbing and covering my body with hers. I pat her back, looking to Dad for help, but he smiles down at us. Like his whole world is right in front of him. I smile back but my eyes grow heavy, and I start drifting again.

When I wake again, I feel a hard body curved around mine. Cracking my eyes open, I take in the body of muscle molded to me. “Nix?” I whisper, and his grip tightens.

“I love you so fucking much, Monroe. I’m so sorry I couldn’t save you.” His voice is strangled.

“You literally took a bullet for me,” I point out.

“Yeah, but it went through me and into you.” I shush him, bringing him closer.

“Where is Holly?” I ask

“Ezra has her. She snatched her up as she tried to run away.” I nod into his chest.
