“It’s nice to see someone take her seriously. She hasn’t always gotten the respect she deserves.”

God help me. He was the only one who could.

Miles dropped his hand, no longer laughing. He turned, looking behind him. “What? Did someone say my name?”

He had to be fucking kidding me. I glared at him.

“Yeah, yeah, look, it’s… uh… somebody. I’ll catch up with you guys later.”

He disappeared into the crowd.

“That was weird,” Cash said.

“Totally.” I had no choice. I pulled the same move. “Oh, hey, Dylan’s waving me down. I’ll talk to you later.”

I damn near ran to the bar. Malcolm was there.

“Hey,” he said. “Faith is doing a great job tonight.”

All Faith. All the time.

It was unbelievable.

Faith

“Your boyfriend looked like he wanted to angry fuck you,” Shawna said. “It was totally hot.” She fanned herself.

It was alarming. MacKay had genuinely looked angry. I frowned at Shawna. “I think something’s wrong. He looked upset.”

Of course I knew why he was upset. He’d been nothing but polite to me at work, but that was it. Nothing more. I had texted him a few times and he hasn’t responded or had with clipped answers. He was angry with me and keeping his distance.

“He looked like he’s upset he can’t murder your vagina right now.”

There was a visual. “You have such a way with words.” I bit my straw tip before dropping it, suddenly aware of what I was doing. “I didn’t mean to do the straw thing, but I suddenly got nervous around him. He was so…”

“Alpha?”

“Angry. And he’s not my boyfriend. You cannot say that out loud.” I glanced around the crowded room to make sure no one was paying attention to us. No, MacKay was not my boyfriend. He’d essentially offered to be and I had said nothing. Or no. I wasn’t even sure at this point. But I certainly hadn’t said yes and I had been second-guessing that every single day since then.

Aside from the fact that MacKay looked like he could chew nails, the event was going incredibly well. It was heavily attended by lots of the local celebrities as well as pro football players and a few popular country musicians. The venue was an incredible space that opened onto a rooftop deck with a view of Broadway.

Dylan had hired an event planner named Melanie and while she looked relaxed now, the last two days she’d been a drill sergeant, directing the florist, the caterer, and a variety of other vendors. Shawna was impressed with Melanie’s swag bag efforts. Then again, Shawna was impressed with everything. She’d been grabbing my arm every thirty seconds, exclaiming in awe at one thing or another.

I was happy she was there with me and I was glad she was having fun, because if she wasn’t, I would be fixating on MacKay’s behavior. His very intense and unusual behavior. Instead, I was allowing her to sweep me up in her excitement.

Okay, I was fixating a little. A lot. Even as I introduced Shawna to some of Cash’s friends and their girlfriends, I was worried that MacKay seemed mad at me. We talked every day in some form or another at work and he’d been cool, but not angry. Maybe his mood tonight had nothing to do with me? Maybe it was just the importance of this event. He had a lot on his plate.

I should reassure him everything was going well. That was just part of my job, being a team player. Right?

“Maybe I should go talk to him,” I said.

Shawna paused in the act of taking a selfie with the giant logo as her backdrop. “Are you insane? Don’t do that. You’re just asking for trouble and potentially a public display of both of your thirstiness for each other.”

“He’s not thirsty for me anymore. That’s obvious.” Which was what I had wanted. Right?

Obviously wrong.

“Do not go talk to him. You guys essentially broke up before you were even together. You should not talk to him at a public event. It’s a super bad idea.”
