“A little. A lot of people know. Except Cash. You need to just tell him, because it’s obvious to me that something is going on now between you two.”

Technically, nothing was going on between us. Was there something less than nothing? Because we were that. “Why would you think that?”

Miles scoffed. “Why would I think that? You practically growled at the girl. You sounded like you wanted to throw her over your shoulder and take her home and lock her in your room for a week solid.”

That wasn’t a bad idea.

I would like that.

“That’s my problem and I need to figure out how to deal with it. Let it go. She wants to be just friends.”

Miles put his hands in his pockets and shook his head slowly. “For real? Damn.”

“Yeah. So just leave me to my growling. I’ll recover. Eventually. In a decade or so.” It was going to take more than a minute, that was for damn sure. I’d never felt about another woman the way I did about Faith.

“I don’t know what to say other than are you sure you’ve gotten her final answer?”

“I’m not sure about anything. I’m just telling you what she’s told me. She definitely said she doesn’t want to date.”

I understood it. I respected it. That didn’t mean I had to like it.

“Don’t you want to shoot your shot?”

I eyed him. “Are you fucking with me?”

Miles laughed. “Poor word choice. Oh, shut up, here comes Young.”

Fantastic. I was going to have to endure another round of Cash expressing his appreciation to me for hiring Faith.

“You don’t have to tell me to shut up. I didn’t want to talk about it in the first place,” I told Miles.

Cash clapped me on the shoulder in greeting. “Hey, buddy, what’s up? When are you coming over to the house to use my golf simulator again?”

After Faith went back to Wanted. “I’d love to. Maybe in a few weeks once our rye launch is behind us.”

“What about tomorrow? The girls are all going shopping. I’ll be home alone. Johnny has a football game. Want to come with me to watch him play and then we can hit the simulator?”

Girls presumably meant Faith as well. I could use the distraction and watching Cash’s stepson play middle school ball was right up my alley. “Sure, that sounds good.”

“Aren’t you going to invite me too?” Miles asked.

“You’re at my house all the time. Do you really need an invitation? I just assumed you were coming over since Toni’s going with Sera and Faith and the girls.” He didn’t wait for a response. Instead he turned back to me. “Mac, I just want to tell you again how much I appreciate what you’re doing for Faith.”

Here we go.

Miles coughed into his hand.

“She’s really blossoming under you.”

For fuck’s sake.

Miles had graduated to laughing behind his hand.

It would be a miracle if I kept a straight face.

“She’s coming into her own.”

In about three seconds I was going to be forced to fake a heart attack.
