“No sunglasses, cariño?” he asks, amused.

“I forgot them in my hotel room.”

That, and I couldn’t pack them in my small bag.

“Let’s buy you a pair,” he says, showing me to his ride.

The valet stares at us for a few good moments.

It’s like we’ve planned this thing out. White car, black dress, red shirt on him.

The interior of his ride is cold, and the windows are thankfully tinted, adding a much-needed shadow.

We’re not leaving right away.

He tips his sunglasses down and examines me from above the rim of his glasses.

“I’ve missed you, baby,” he says in that husky voice of his that makes my knees soft.

I should be honest with him. And I should tell him how much I needed to interact with someone this morning. And not just anyone. Not the personnel helping me to locate my phone.

I dwell on whether to tell him.

It’s okay for him to tell me that he’s missed me. I don’t think it’s okay for me to tell him that I’m a little broken and I need to take care of myself.

But I want to say something real to him. Even if I regret it later.

He speaks again before I do.

“I never thought you’d walk into this club. Of all people, you were the last person I thought I’d see this morning.”

“What made you come here?” I ask.

He removes his glasses and holds them, his fist locked on the steering wheel. A shadow goes over his eyes.

He looks away before checking the rearview mirror.

“Kai and I got into a confrontation this morning,” he finally says.

It took him some time to figure out if he wanted to tell me that or not.

“It wasn’t that bad…” he says, a faint grin tugging at his lips.

“It made you come here.”

“Yes. It did.”

“It was because of me?”

He looks at me, a warm smile lining his lips.

“What do you think?”

I stay silent.

“I’m not gonna go into details, but I needed a pretext to get out. I told them I’d come here and search for you.”

“Quite a diversion,” I say.
