Page 45 of When We Feel

His eyes stay locked with mine while he searches for the truth, the whole truth, and the many more things that have happened since we left that room.

“Do you want to go someplace else?” he asks quietly.

His eyes are warm, twinkling with emotion. I feel the same. And I know what’s going through his mind.

And, um… Yes. I’m correct. I’m talking feelings.

I know feelings, how they look, how people express them, and how they feel.

I feel them too.

All I want right now is to go back to that hotel room––our hotel room––and be with him.

Not talk to him about how rough my encounter with Kai was. Maybe not even have sex. Just lie in bed next to him. I wouldn’t even need to be naked. Just lie down, look at the ocean, and talk to him about nothing.

Or stay silent.

It’s that bad.

I glance over his shoulder. The red-haired woman talks on the phone not far from us. She doesn’t pay attention to us. She seems very much engaged in her phone conversation.

“I thought you had some company,” I say.

For a moment, he looks at me, puzzled.

“Company?”

“The woman sitting next to you?”

“Oh… She’s not with me. We met at the bar. She’s waiting for her husband.”

I smile.

“Interesting.”

He laughs.

“It’s true. He’s at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. Car racing,” he adds in response to my tilted eyebrow.

“Car racing…” I murmur.

Kai comes to mind.

“Is it far from here?” I ask.

“No. Do you want to go there?”

“Some other time. Maybe… Not right now. I’m completely…”

He gestures faintly before taking my hand.

“No need to explain it. I feel the same.”

He makes sure the bartender has gotten the money, and he hasn’t forgotten anything on the counter before waving at the woman who’s smiling back at us.

We exit the venue a few moments later. The sun pours over us, garnering a groan from me.

He puts his sunglasses on while I squint in quiet desperation.
