How else would you fight fire but with fire?

"So, you believe the Watcher might be stirring up trouble?" Devlin's gaze slid from me and settled on Dex.

Dex looked uncomfortable under the renewed scrutiny. "Viva can tell you what the tigers said."

"Can she?" Devlin turned back to me. He gave me an 'out with it' gesture with his fingers and sipped his wine.

I told him what I knew, as brief but concise as possible.

"The wolves will fall," Devlin said slowly. "That sentiment is as old as the Vault."

"Older, or there would be no Vault," Calista said.

"I thought the Vault was created to protect all shifters?" I said.

"In theory, yes," Devlin agreed. "But the wolves were the driving force."

"We seized power first," Calista said. "United a dozen warring factions."

"Foxes, tigers, hyenas and a few others," Dex said.

"Dragons?" I asked.

Devlin's mouth quirked to the side. "Dragons tend to keep to themselves. They arrived in the Vault and disappeared to the far side of it."

"Because people stopped trying to discern the difference between dragons and dragon shifters," Calista said, as if Devlin was to blame somehow.

"If a dragon comes at you, you don't stop to ask questions," Devlin said. "Dragons of all kinds never did play well with others."

He was right about one thing. If a dragon tried to bite you in half, you really didn't wait to see if they could shift.

"What about shifters with power?" I asked.

Devlin pressed his thumb to his lips. "Gone before the creation of the Vault, as far as I've been led to believe." He looked as if he'd hold one of us personally responsible if that was wrong.

"Even the scrolls from those times don't mention them," Calista said.

"Comus said it was something the gods did," I said slowly. "Maybe it predates all of that."

"Possibly," Calista agreed. "We may never know, unless he reappears."

"If I see him, I'll try to remember to ask," I said dryly. If he wasn't trying to seduce me, or get me to join him. I half expected him to appear because we were talking about him, but he didn't.

Just as well. I don't think there was room in here for another ego.

"Do that." Devlin nodded. "He can help us with whatever we're dealing with here."

"I thought we could send an envoy to the Watcher," Dex said.

Devlin pursed his lips so his bottom lip started to curl over his thumb. "Yes, do that. But not Knox. It's time my brother and I caught up with a few things."

Knox's lips pressed into a tight line. "If you wish, brother."

"I do wish, brother," Devlin replied. "It's past time to put some rumours to bed. I've heard some troubling things about you both." His expression took in Dex. "Very troubling."
