"Can you not walk so fast?"Gwendolyn complained.

I shortened my stride. I suspected she was deliberately walking slowly. Hades only knew why. Maybe just to be difficult.

"My apologies." I gave a half bow without missing a step.

"That's better." She gave me a smile and linked her arm with mine like we were on a casual stroll by a river somewhere.

I stiffened and resisted the urge to pull away. If she was anyone but the Alpha's wife, I would have.

Anyone except Viva. Her—I would let her tangle every part of herself around me and hope she never let go.

Gwendolyn, on the other hand, wasn't a woman to cross. She seemed to enjoy making those around her uncomfortable. Including Devlin. That went both ways. The lack of an heir wasn't so surprising. They didn't seem to like being in the same room together, much less bed.

"You must be tired after your long journey," I said. I wasn't good at making small talk just for the sake of filling the silence. Personally, I preferred the silence, but she had me on edge. I suspected she knew it too.

"I slept most of the way," she replied easily. "Even though the roads are bumpy for a car to navigate." She looked at me like I was somehow to blame for the state of the Vault's roads. Few people traveled by car outside the city.

"Dex is considering a helicopter," I said. I saw the brochures on his desk. "That would make the trip easier."

"Yes, I suppose it would." She didn't appear to be all that interested in the idea.

Mercifully, silence fell then, until we stopped outside the suite the Alpha used when he visited the city.

"Here we are," I said redundantly. To my relief, the guards already stood at their post outside the door. "I'll leave you to your rest."

She lowered perfectly drawn eyebrows into a neat frown. "You should inspect the rooms thoroughly before you leave me in there alone."

I swallowed. "Of course." She was right, but the guards would have done a sweep on their arrival. Still, it didn't hurt to double check. It would be a shame if something caused her to break a fingernail.

I opened the door and stepped inside.

She followed me in and closed the door behind us.

"It looks clear out here," I said. The rooms were bigger than Dex's and more opulently decorated. Considering it was used maybe once a year, I thought it was a waste.

I pulled the curtains aside and looked behind them. As I expected, there was no one there. My senses told me we were alone, but I humoured her anyway.

"Check the bathroom," she ordered.

I nodded and stepped inside. No one hid in the bath or the shower, or behind the door. No one crouched in the toilet room.

"All clear." When I stepped back out of the bathroom, I found Gwendolyn standing in the middle of the bedroom area, completely naked.

"Um." I looked down at the floor.

She stepped toward me. "Don't be so shy," she purred. "I know you want me."

I wanted her about as much as I wanted a chicken to peck off my balls.

I raised my hands. "I'm sorry, I should go back now. Excuse me."

I moved toward the door.

She stepped in front of me and placed the tips of her fingers on my chest. "No one needs to know." Before I could move a hair, she grabbed my cock through my pants.

Or at least, she tried to. I managed to turn sideways, so she grazed past my leg.

"Iwould know," I said firmly. I gripped her wrist in my hand and removed her hand from my chest.
