Devlin cocked his head and raised both eyebrows. "And yet you just told me about not one, buttwoattacks in recent months. One of those just this morning." His tone was dangerous, laced with warning.

Dex cleared his throat. "Both were thwarted," he said firmly. "All of the attackers are dead now."

"Ahhh, dead." The Alpha nodded. "Too dead to give us any useful information. Howunfortunate."

Dex squirmed in his seat.

Squirmed.

"It was them or us," he said finally.

"The Keeper is right," Bain said. "They killed one woman this morning. They would have killed another if we tried to restrain them."

I opened my mouth to deny that suggestion, but closed it again. I could have bound any but the hemitheos, but by the time he stuck me to the wall, they were dead. He might well have killed me, given another minute or two.

Devlin's eyes narrowed at Bain for a moment. Then he sat back and smiled broadly. "Well, okay then. We can't have shifters going around causing death and havoc."

Everyone seemed to relax a little at that. When I say a little, I mean barely noticeable, but still present, like someone pulled one hair off a statue's balls.

"No, we can't." Dex raised his glass to that, and the rest of us followed.

Except Gwendolyn, who didn't move.

"Maybe you should go and lie down?" Devlin suggested, like he wished she was anywhere but here. "You look pale."

She shot up out of her seat so fast she took us all by surprise.

"Yes, I will. Bain, you can escort me." She raised her chin at him like she dared him to refuse.

Bain looked like he wanted to do anything else in the world but that.

I was almost sure he was about to say his place was here.

He looked toward Dex.

"Please, escort her to her room and assign guards you can trust," Dex said. "Then come back here. We have a lot to talk about."

Gwendolyn's expression darkened. If she could have shot daggers out of her eyes at Dex, she would have.

Why? Did she have a thing for Bain? I totally got that. The guy was practically sex on legs.

He was also way too smart to screw the Alpha's wife, even if he was into her. Which he obviously wasn't. Even one of the Residence's stone statues could tell that.

"Yes, Keeper." Bain nodded curtly and gestured for Gwendolyn to walk in front of him.

She did, hips swaying as she went.

I glanced at Devlin. He watched her through narrowed eyes.

He must have sensed my gaze on him, because he turned and gave me a leering smile. His eyes dropped toward my breasts. He licked his lips, then looked back up to my face.

I raised my eyebrows and gave him a look that would have forced most guys to look away.

He just smiled more broadly.

I'll say this for him, he wasn't shy. He was intimidating, but not as much as I was led to believe. My instincts screamed that I should be extra careful around him for that very reason. He was the kind of guy who pounced the moment people let down their guard. I had no idea in whatwayhe might pounce on me, but I would watch myself.

I reminded myself of the possibility that everyone left in the room wanted to use me as a weapon. The knowledge there were more like me out there didn't reduce the danger. On the contrary, it might make it more likely.
