"Um." Yard looked around.

"Never mind, we need to get away from her." Kerina nodded toward the gate. "Then we'll figure out which way to go. Follow me."

Devlin frowned at me, but I shrugged and gestured for us to do as she said. She was the one trained for this.

"We could move faster if we shifted," Devlin said.

I blinked into the rising sun. "Yard would be noticed. No offence, Yard, but I assume you can't run as fast as a wolf when you're in human form."

Yard smiled. "No offence taken, mate. No, I can't run out of sight on a dark night."

"We could leave him here," Devlin suggested.

"I'm not leaving anyone behind," I said firmly, more than a little irritated he'd even suggest it. "Especially someone who has helped us as much as he has."

Kerina ducked around a corner so quickly I almost missed her.

I followed and found her pressed against a wall.

"We should be out of sight of that woman, but she might have called the guards out by now. I recommend we find a place to spend the day, then move out at dark."

I nodded. "Okay. I hope you know a place."

She flashed a brief smile. "Of course. This way."

We spentan uncomfortable day hidden inside a sewer pipe. It was damp and stank, but I was grateful for the relative safety. Especially when shifters, in animal form, swarmed the area, looking for us. The stink covered our presence.

I wanted to vomit the entire time.

Devlin seemed even less impressed. Thank Hades he kept his mouth shut and hunkered down with the rest of us every time anyone went by.

By the time the sun set, we hadn’t seen guards for a couple of hours and I was more or less used to the smell.

"I'll check the area," Kerina said. She rose from her spot against a wall and snuck out of the end of the tunnel.

"She better come back," Devlin grumbled.

"She will," I said. "She wouldn't have stuck with us this long only to ditch us now."

Devlin didn't look convinced, but he nodded.

"He and Kayley would get along," Yard said, jerking a thumb toward Devlin. "They're both cranky bums."

I snorted. "I can't wait to meet her then."

Devlin gave me a filthy look, but any retort was interrupted by Kerina's return.

"It's clear out there, at least the immediate area. They might have set up an ambush somewhere, but I can't be sure without scouring the whole area. That would take too much time."

I nodded. "We'll take our chances."

"Good call," she said. She turned and led the way back out.

The evening air, fresh and cool, was a welcome change. I sucked in a few breaths while scanning the area. If anyone waited for us, they were well hidden. The streets were empty, as far as I could see. Good. I didn't think walking out of a sewer would be good for our reputations.

"Now, that safe house." I arched a brow at Yard. "Can you find it from here?"
