Yard turned around slowly, a frown on his brow. "None of this is familiar. I guess I should have paid more attention, but it was dark."

"I think you're lost," I told him. I restrained a sigh.

"Kerina?"

"Knox has a few places in the city. We could pick one and try there. If they aren't there, we could try another." She didn't look pleased at the idea.

"That could take days," Devlin said. "Just pick the closest one. They can find us there if they have to."

"Yes, sir," Kerina said. "It's not far."

"It better not be. I like your pretty little head right where it is," Devlin said.

Kerina gave him a look which suggested he was lucky she didn't stick a knife in his eyeball.

"Follow me, but stay close. If anyone is hunting us, they have guns."

"I'll walk in the middle," Devlin said. He positioned himself so we were arrayed around him. The perfect cover for a bullet. If he wasn't the Alpha, I might stab him in the eyeball myself.

Silently, we headed down the street, keeping to trees and hedges where possible. Every nerve in my body was alert, watching for movement, listening for sounds. I tried not to breathe in too deeply. Now we were out of the sewers, the smell clung to us even more odorous than before. I hoped to Hades Knox had a nice, big bath. I would need one after this. And a change of clothes. These could be burnt.

"There's someone up ahead," Kerina whispered. "At least two. Maybe three."

We stopped to listen. I had no idea how she knew. I couldn't see a thing. Instinct, I guess. Whatever it was, I trusted her. She'd stayed alive for this long, after all.

"Where?" I asked.

"Maybe fifty metres away. I don't think they've seen us yet."

"Can we get around them?" I asked. My palms were sweaty and under my arms were hot. If they got close enough, they would smell us. If they had guns, they wouldn't need to get close enough.

"We'll have to go a long way out of our way, but we can do it," she said.

"I'd rather arrive later than arrive dead," I said. I think I saw that on a sticker on a car in the outside world, or something. Either way, it fit.

"Me too," Yard agreed.

"Hurry it up," Devlin grunted.

"Okay. This way." Kerina headed off at a right angle from the way we had been going. "We're going to have to cross the street at some point. If we can find somewhere without streetlights—"

"There shouldn't be anywhere like that," I said. "In theory."

Kerina's teeth flashed. "In theory."

I could feel her judging me. No matter how well I did my job, things weren't always perfect here in the city.

"Yeah, yeah," I muttered.

I looked over my shoulder and saw a figure in the shadows. And another. And another. She was right, there were three. No, a fourth peeled out of the shadows.

"Wait," I hissed.

"What? Have they seen us?" Devlin sounded frantic.

"No. They're trying not to be seen," I said.

"Huh?" Devlin asked.
