Evangeline tensed as if his touch sickened her, but he didn’t seem to notice. Only Mina could see her for what she was.
Mina exhaled, dropping the knife she held. “If he ever gets out of that spell, whatever it is, he’ll never forgive you for this. For any of it.”
“Maybe so.” Evangeline shrugged glancing between them. “But for now, My love. I need you to kill her.”
“What?” Erik frowned. “I thought you wanted her alive? You wanted to use her for—”
“I know what I said,” Evangeline said, barely holding back the hiss in her voice. “But I’ve changed my mind. She’s too much of a threat to our peace. I need you to bite her. Drain her blood and kill her.”
“Won’t that harm you?” He shook his head. “I won’t put you in danger.”
“No, My Love,” Evangeline said, stepping forward to touch his cheek.
Erik’s body instantly relaxed and the protest melted from his face. “Of course, My Darling. I would do anything for you.”
“Good.” She stepped back and turned to face Mina.
“This is what you want?” Mina sighed. “You want him to kill me. You think it is a punishment, and your salvation, but it’s not. He’ll never forgive you for this.”
“If you want your friends to live, if you want Distova to remain untouched, you will submit to the bite. You will die, right here, and right now.”
The faint memory of their earlier conversation came to mind. Evangeline couldn’t kill her, but Erik could, and if he killed her that would sever their bond. He would gift Evangeline her lifeforce.
Swallowing, she looked at his blank face. Without recognition he stalked towards her like a monster stalking its prey.
“Erik,” she whispered, and he hesitated less than a foot from her. “I…I don’t know if you can hear me beyond the spell, but I need you to hear this. I—”
“Bite her!” Evangeline snapped, and Erik shot forward, hauling Mina against his body.
His fingers wrenched her head to the side, and as his fangs sank into her neck she whispered. “I forgive you.”
