“What is that?” She asked, looking quickly to where Lucy was using Harker to get back to her feet.

“Our plan has failed,” Lucy said. “It’s the King.”

“What?” Mina looked back to the great figure coming closer. Swooping through the air on great wings, she saw its dark scales reflecting the moonlight, its long neck, and snout.

“He’s changed his shape to a beast that can fly faster than we can run,” Lucy said, stepping to her side.

“What do we do?” She asked.

“Nothing!” Hissed another voice from behind them.

Turning around, Mina stared wide eyed as Evangeline stepped from the water of the lake, her clothes drying by the second.

“Did you really think you could run from me,” she hissed. “That I would not sense another witch working magic inmyhome? Did you think that I wouldn’t be ready for someone to come and rescue you?”

Looking at Lucy, an unpleasant idea crossed Mina’s mind. “You’ll have a small opening to work with, but I need you both to run.”

“No.” Lucy shook her head. “I’m not leaving you.”

Mina smiled sadly. “You said it yourself, the plan failed. Go. Survive. I’ll do the same, and one day we’ll see each other again.”

“There is nowhere they can run that I won’t find them,” Evangeline laughed. “And besides, my love is almost here. Why leave before the fun really begins?”

Mina closed her eyes Erik screeched in his monstrous form, his great wings sending a resounding boom through the air as he began his descent. She took a deep breath and snatched the knife from Lucy’s belt. She turned her gaze to Evangeline and drove the blade right into the meat of her thigh.

The witch cried out in agony, and Mina groaned against the pain. She at least was used to pain, Evangeline from what she’d gathered was a lady born and bred. She’d never would’ve known the pain of falling from trees or fighting with the local boys. She wasn’t a fighter, just a witch.

“Harker. Get Lucy out of here. Run!” Mina shouted over her shoulder.

“I’m not leaving you,” Lucy snapped, grabbing her wrist, trying to pull the blade from her leg.

“Ple—”

Erik let out a loud cry, and his heavy body slammed into the ground. He cried out again, and like the werewolves who fought for him, his wings, and back began to jerk and crack as he changed his form.

Mina pulled the blade from her thigh, and shoved Lucy towards the werewolf standing beside them. “Go. Lucy. Go.”

“There’s nowhere to run now.” Evangeline threw a handout, and Lucy backed away from her screaming in pain as the ground broke beneath her feet and old veins wrapped around her legs. Harker howled as one hooked around his midsection.

“Stop! Stop this!” Mina shouted. “Stop it. I’ll do anything.”

Evangeline laughed. “Anything?”

“Anything,” Mina turned to face her fully. “I’ll give you whatever you want. Just let them go. They’ve done nothing but try to help me. Just let them go.”

The witch waved her hand again, and a flash of violet energy caught Mina’s eye as Lucy’s body bowed, and Harker collapsed. The two of them frozen in place.

“Do as I command and I will free them. Resist and I will ensure their deaths are worse than anything you could ever imagine,” Evangline said, stepping forward again.

“I’ll do anything,” Mina said. Her heartbeat like a drum in her ears. She was by no means ready to die, but she couldn’t let Lucy or Harker suffer because of her. They’d been kind to her. They were her friends, her family.

“My love,” Erik called out, returning to his humanoid form. “I told you I would return her to you.”

“I know,” Evangeline said, smiling at him. She held out her hand. “Come. I have need of you now.”

He stepped around her fully clothed in his favored black leather shirt, and pants.

“What is it, My Darling? What do you need?” He asked, reaching to tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear.
