Her eyes almost popped out of her head. What!?”

She tried to hop out of my arms. Her eyes met my mother’s then mine. “Hayden, put me down!”

I laughed, placing her on her feet.

Lydia ran over to my mother embracing her. “I’m so happy you are here!”

“Me to darling.”

My mother smiled at me.

“Hayden, we have it from here. Go do what you need to do. We will meet you in the garden at 2 ready for the ceremony.”

“Alright, the photographer will be here in thirty minutes.”

I glanced at my watch. “The attorney will be here soon too.”

“Bye, Hayden.”

I glanced at Lydia. “Ok. Bye.”

I ran around the city that morning preparing for our wedding. I picked up the marriage license from city hall, a barber cut and styled my hair, then I picked up my tuxedo. I was dressed by a tailor in a private suite near the garden. The photographer captured my memorable moments and my special message to Lydia.

The sun shinned bright, on April 3rd. I stood at the alter in the beautiful lush garden, awaiting my bride to be. I inhaled the floral scent of the flowers surrounding me. My mother sat in the front row all smiles. Lydia walked down the aisle toward me wearing a form fitting beaded white wedding gown with a high halter neck line. The dress trailed down the aisle. Capturing her hands, we stood face to face before the officiant. I was captivated by my stunning bride, I almost forgot to repeat my vows after him. Lydia and I laughed. After our nuptials, I was eager to hear those magic words.

“You may now kiss the bride.” My heart beat like a drum against my chest cavity. I was nervous. I lifted the veil, revealing her angelic face. I smiled. Lydia Carmichael is now Lydia Gaster. Slowly, my hands crept along her blushed cheeks, our lips collided, singing a song that only they could sing. Lydia looped her arm through mine, we walked over to my mother. She hugged us both.

“Mom, I can’t thank you enough for being here for our first wedding. Grandfather insist we get married at the family estate this summer.”

“I will definitely be there. I think this was the most important ceremony.” She winked.

“I’m happy I was here to see you both express your love for one another.”

“Mom, you have no idea how happy I am.”

My mother’s elegance always carried well. My mother didn’t come from money either. Through everything Lydia and I have gone through, I forgot my mother would be the one person to understand what we were feeling. My mother’s long brown hair was swept up into a perfect bun in the back of her head. She wore a long beautiful embroidered cream dress.

“Mom, come on. Let’s go to dinner.”

Lydia and my mom got along well. I was ignored at dinner. They were deep into their own conversation.

“Excuse me. Is this seat taken?”

I glanced up into the man’s eyes mirroring mine. I stood. “Dad,” I stated flatly.

My father leaned in kissing my mother’s cheek. “Congratulations, Lydia. I am your new father-in-law Harvey.” Lydia stood throwing her arms around my father’s neck.

“It’s so nice to meet you Mr. Gaster.”

“Don’t be so formal. We are family now.” My father sat next to my mother. Mesa Grill was the perfect place to have dinner. We sat in the middle of the restaurant under the wood plank ceiling beams surrounded by the gold accents throughout.

I sipped my red wine. “I didn’t think you would come.”

“I can’t stay out of my beautiful wife’s presence that long.”

My mother elbowed him in the ribs.

“No, son. I’m sorry you thought we would turn our backs on you. We love you. We are a family. You do not have to step down. You are still the CEO of Gaster investments.”

Lydia gushed with excitement. I placed my hand over hers.

“Dad, I need time to think. It was distasteful how Vicky treated Lydia. You aren’t any better. You questioned my decisions! I don’t care what her occupation is. I love her and that is all that matters. Tonight, is about her. I thank you for showing up and being respectful to my wife. We can discuss our differences at another time. Let’s act like a family.”

I pulled Lydia’s hand to my lips, planting a warm kiss. She blushed.
