Page 100 of Years Between You

“I was going to—”

“Sure you fucking were. After making out with my ex-girlfriend outside a fast food joint, your next stop was my place, right?”

“That’s not what—”

“I can’t believe you. Weeks of pining, of being down about some girl you couldn’t tell me about, andthisis why you couldn’t tell me!”

“It’s been years! What is your problem?” I surprise myself by yelling. I hate seeing him go off on Miles, interrupting him and making him feel like he’s done something wrong.

Vic remains holding me, and I think it offers me some strength I wouldn’t normally have.

“This isn’t your conversation.”

“Sure it is! You’ve been complicating things between us without even knowing it. Now that you finally do,get over it!You didn’t even like me, you cheating asshole!”

Yeah, I am drunk. Sober Autumn will be appalled tomorrow.

A shocked laugh comes from him. He doesn’t know how to respond to that, because I’m right. I might sound a little ridiculous, and look like a total mess, but I'm right.

So his attention goes back to Miles. “Maybe I’m mad because you could have told me weeks ago. It seems like of all people in your life you have to confide in, maybe I’d have been a good one.” He decides he’s done talking, and shoulder checks Miles on his way past.

“Will you three go inside? Or to the car?” Miles asks quietly.

“I’m not hungry anymore,” Reya whispers.

I nod slowly, making my feet move to grab his keys. He follows after his brother when I do.

By the time he catches up, we’re in the car watching through the windows. The red neon light coming from the building beside them makes the interaction look even more intense.

Mouths move, but we can’t hear from here. There’s head shaking, and chest poking, and at one point I think Justin might punch his brother.

I am not mentally prepared for that to happen.

“You think this is fucking funny?“ Justin shouts loud enough that it reaches us.

Miles is laughing, and I don’t get it. I don’t see how there’s anything to laugh about. When he stops, it appears to de-escalate for a minute, and the two just talk. We just keep watching, quietly and anxiously. There’s not a single sound in the car.

Until Reya starts snoring. I can’t help laughing when Vic and I share a look. Our girl is going to be disappointed when she wakes up tomorrow and finds out she missed this.

“She’s refused to say a single negative word about you!”

The bubble is popped by Miles' voice. I can’t help my curiosity, I roll the window down, just an inch.

“How fucking great that you get to take advantage of the new and improved version.”

It’s the last thing Justin says before walking away, and Miles lets him go this time. He doesn’t look at me when he gets back in the car and my chest sinks.

“You two are more than welcome to the guest room,” he tells Vic.

We drive home in silence.

I hate every second of this. The look on Justin’s face was too familiar, pulling me back to a time where I was convinced I deserved it. I was convinced I deserved every ounce of anger and disrespect he threw my way.

It was easy to believe I’ve moved past that, but here we are. I feel like I deserve this feeling right now.

“Are you okay?” I ask my boyfriend once we’re alone in his room.

I won’t forget any part of the night we just had, but especially not that. No matter what happens.
