Page 101 of Years Between You

Miles Mason Cress is myboyfriend.

“You’re asking me?” He laughs. “You’re something else,” he says, pulling me into him. I reside happily nestled into him when we fall down against the pillows.

“Yes, I’m asking you. That was a lot.”

He’s smiling, not looking like he was just a part of that argument.

“Areyouokay?”

I shrug. “I think so. I’m more worried about you.”

“We must really love each other,” he says.

“We must.”

He sits up then, grabbing a water bottle from his nightstand. I fall even more in love when he hands it to me.

“You’ll need this more than I do.” Only once I’ve started guzzling it down does he say, “I’m relieved.”

I nod slowly. “I was hoping you would be. I mean… when this came out eventually. That was scarier than how I pictured it.”

“I didn’t want him to find out like that, but what’s done is done. He’ll get over it.”

I set the water down, and Miles pulls me into him again. My back ends up against his chest, and he begins to rub my shoulders with the most incredibly placed pressure. I moan, overwhelmed by his magic hands. I love that I’m in a position to feel him slowly rising against me.

“You are so hot, you know that?” he whispers the words against my ear. “Even hotter when you’re telling someone off.”

“You enjoyed that?”

“Very much.”

I’m going to keep him.

Miles

Iwalk through my mother’s front door, knowing how much I’m not going to love this conversation. But it’s going to be worth it.

“What were you thinking?” she yells as soon as she sees me. She’s not really asking.

Justin stands with his hands down against her counter, his shoulders stiff. I’m searching for the words I need to make them understand. How to make them understand I’m not doing this to them, I’m doing itforme.

I know if I ran into anyone else that day, or let my mom set me up, I wouldn’t be this happy. I’d be settling without even knowing it, and the thought makes me feel sick. If being married to Kara for years has taught me anything, it's that I never want to feel like that again.

“I need you to tell me exactly what your problem is with Autumn.” I say it to my mom, and ignore my brother’s presence.

She blinks in surprise. “What?”

“Why do you hate her?”

“I don’thateher, Miles. I let the girl work for me. You think I’d do that if I hated her?”

Justin shakes his head in disbelief, still clearly upset he wasn’t told about that.

“Yeah, I did think that,” I go on. “I can’t explain why else you’d be so hell-bent on wanting us to stay away from each other.”

“Do I really need to explain?” The look I give her makes her continue. “All those things she lied about with your brother, the way she treated him? I will not believe it’s a coincidence that she’s lured you in.”
