The four of us pile into his car, and I still can’t believe we’re doing this. Everyone but Reya seems to still be recovering from our full stomachs.

Miles turns on the radio, and doesn’t realize what a bad idea that was. Not until the three women in his car are screaming Taylor Swift lyrics at the top of their lungs as if they’re going through the hardest time in their life. One glance at his amused smile has butterflies fluttering through me.

I want to get used to nights like this.

The drive-through is a nightmare, to the point where it blocks most of the entrance to the parking lot.

“I’m not sitting in that,” I groan at the same time Vic says, “Please, no.”

“Going inside it is,” he says.

Reya grabs my hand and holds on for dear life once we’re out of the car.

“Thanks for letting your boyfriend take me to get a burger.”

I pat her shoulder. “He’s not my b— Wait, are you?” I ask, turning to him. I might be drunk, but I do realize what a terrible way that is to ask someone.

Still, I don’t take it back. He’s so entertained by us, he’s already got the biggest smile on his face.

“Do you want me to be your boyfriend?”

I nod my head multiple times. Reya is also nodding next to me, quite the supporter.

He slides his hand back to that perfect place at the back of my head, pulling me out of my friend's hold. It’s the one he uses to tilt my face up to look at him.

“I think that sounds pretty great,” he says.

Both of my friends squeal. I think Vic claps, but I’m obviously distracted.

I try to stand on my toes, asking him for a kiss without words, but he suddenly goes tense.

That smile I love drops so quickly, I go into panic mode. He lets go of his hold on me, but he doesn’t break our eye contact. It feels like he’s trying to tell me something without words, but I don’t pick up on it. Falling back on my heels, there’s a question on the tip of my tongue.

“Are you fucking serious?”

A chill runs down my spine at that voice. All the hairs on my arms stand up.

How is hehere? Of all places?

“Shit,” Reya hisses. “I just wanted a burger.”

“What are you doing, Miles?”

He turns to face the owner of the words, and I stumble backwards, closer to my girls. Vic’s hand wraps around my armwhen I do. It’s a shame none of us can drive, because I feel like I need a getaway car.

“You can’t even answer me?”

“Calm down.”

“I’m not going to. Next? Anything else you want to say to me?”

I can see him shaking his head in my periphery. I dare a glance and he’s… horrified. He looks like this is the worst possible thing that could’ve happened to him today.

I can’t stand it. I want to shrink, to disappear.

“This has nothing to do with you,” Miles tells his brother calmly.

“Apparently, because if it did then surely mybrotherwould have had the fucking balls to mention it.”
