“Have a seat, Malaysia.”
She sat on the couch across from the hospital bed.
“Why are you acting distant?” she snarled.
“Did you change your mind about us?”
I dropped to my knees before her, cupping her face. “Not ever.”
“Then why are you acting so cold?”
“Baby, I wasn’t supposed to operate on your brother because of our relationship.” I pointed between us.
“It’s against hospital rules.”
Her eyes widened. “But you’re the best, Ethan. Only you could have saved him!”
“I know, baby. But I can still get suspended because of how close I am to the patient.”
Malaysia’s gaze dropped to her lap.
“Baby, it’s going to be ok. While we are at the hospital, we need to keep our relationship a secret.”
The room brightened. Our eyes were drawn to the door.
“Malaysia and Ethan?”
I stood to my feet. “Hello, Dr. Stephens.”
He stepped inside, closing the door behind him then sitting next to Malaysia.
“I read the chart. Was that your brother who had surgery tonight?”
“Yes.”
“How are you holding up?” He wrapped his arm around her shoulder.
“I’m ok,” she sniffled.
His cold eyes stared into mine.
“Did I hear you correctly? You want to keep your relationship a secret?” He retracted his arm from around Malaysia’s shoulder. “Malaysia, you said Ethan was your friend.”
“I know. He was and is.”
His black eyebrows wrinkled. “Oh, I get it. You’re friends with benefits. Because when I walked past Ethan’s office door the day you were here visiting, it sounded like he was giving it to you good.” His sinister laugh filled the room.
“Malaysia isn’t your concern,” I stated through gritted teeth.
Harper rose. “So, you’re keeping your relationship a secret why?”
I stepped toe to toe with him. “None of your fucking business, Harper!”
He flashed his perfect white teeth. “You want to play games, huh? Did you really want her or did you only want her because I was interested in her?”
“You want the truth! I always wanted her!”
“I wanted her the moment I laid eyes on her. I had no idea she’d tell you we were just friends.”
