Ethan

I walked through the well-lit halls, speaking to staff members in passing. I peeled off my blue surgical cap as I stepped into the crowded waiting room. Before I could call out his parents’ names, Malaysia spotted me. She whispered to her parents, pointing in my direction. They rushed to the door way where I stood.

Malaysia’s red, teary eyes stared into mine. “Ethan, how is he?”

I looked past Malaysia extending my hand toward her parents. “Mr. and Mrs. Newton, I am Dr. Daniels.”

If hospital administration found out I was in a relationship with Malaysia, I could be in big trouble. Even though I don’t know Jordan personally, I know his sister. I was too close emotionally to the patient. I wasn’t supposed to operate on Jordan. However, I was his only hope.

“It is good to meet you, Dr. Daniels,” they stated, shaking my hand respectively.

“Did you operate on my son?” Mrs. Newton asked.

“Yes.” I paused. Their worried eyes never left me.

“Jordan’s surgery went well.”

Mrs. Newton fell against Mr. Newton. He held her tighter in his arms.

“I was able to remove the bullet from the right side of his brain.”

Her lips trembled. “Someone shot my baby in the head?” she wailed.

Mrs. Newton’s teary eyes widened. “But you said Jordan will be ok, right?”

I tried swallowing past the lump in my throat. “In time, yes.” I peeked at Malaysia, then back into her parents’ faces.

“He’s lucky to be alive. Ninety percent of patients wounded by a bullet in the head don’t survive. It will take time for Jordan to recover.”

Her beautiful brown face fell into my chest. She cried and shook like leaf. I had to console her even though I wasn’t supposed to. I wrapped my big strong arms around her. I scanned the room. Several people gawked at us.

“Dr. Daniels?”

I glanced at Mrs. Newton. “Yes.”

“Thank you for taking care of both of my babies. It is you who provides the chauffeured vehicle for Malaysia every day, isn’t it?”

I ran my hand across the back of my neck. “Yes, Mrs. Newton.”

“When can we see Jordan?” Mr. Newton asked.

Malaysia stepped back. I desperately wanted to wipe the tears away from her pretty cheeks.

“He’s in ICU. I need to check his vitals. I will have a nurse escort you to his room soon.”

Mr. Newton nodded. Mrs. Newton embraced me.

“Thanks again for saving my son’s life.”

“You’re welcome.”

Mr. Newton grabbed her hand, ushering her back to their seats.

I glanced at Malaysia. “I need to speak with you a moment.”

She reached for my hand. I pulled it back, placing it against her lower back, leading her into an empty semi-lit maternity suite down the hall. Heat radiated from her skin. Malaysia clutched her arms to her chest.
