Malaysia rushed towards us, pushing us apart, standing between us.

“Harper, at the time, Ethan and I were just friends. I didn’t know he had feelings for me until later. Constantly, I lied to myself. Truth is, I felt the same way about him.

So, yes, now we aren’t just friends.”

He snickered again, pointing his finger in my direction accompanied by a cold stare. “You weren’t supposed to operate on her brother! You are finished here!” Harper turned on his heels and stormed out of the room.

I sat on the couch, head in my hands. Malaysia wrapped her arms around my shoulders.

“I’m so sorry,” she cried.

I flinched as I pulled her into my arms. I hoped she didn’t notice. The gunshot taken to the vest burned and stung. Earlier upon climbing into my scrubs I ran my hand across the purple and blue bruise on my chest.

“Don’t be, beautiful. I’ll find a job at a different hospital.”

“Ethan, I will help in any way I can.” She brushed her fingers through my hair.

I smiled, intertwining our lips.

“You are all that matters right now. Well, you and your brother.” I smirked, staring into her eyes.

“Come on, baby, let’s go see your brother.”

MALAYSIA

I didn’t mean to cause Ethan any trouble. He was truly my knight in shining armor. When I’d been in Ethan’s apartment with Peter, my eyes were glued to Peter’s screens in the office. It was like watching a movie live. Ethan didn’t hesitate. The man exchanged words with Ethan then shot him. Ethan took two steps back from the force of the bullet. I shielded my mouth, releasing a deep scream within. Chills tingled along my spine. The man turned the gun on my brother. The bullet released from the chamber, entering my brother’s head.

“No!” Ethan and I called out at the same time. I dropped to my knees.

Peter gawked at me. “Malaysia, Ethan didn’t want you to see any of this!”

“I know,” I sobbed.

Peter couldn’t leave his station. He needed to assist Ethan. Ethan had put down the monsters who’d harmed my brother.

“Ethan requested I drive you to the hospital.”

“Let’s go,” I sniffled.

Frantically, I searched for my coat in Ethan’s closet. It was hanging right in front, but my eyes were blurry due to the tears.

“Malaysia, we need to get going,” Peter stated from behind.

“Ok.” I held myself together long enough to call my parents, instructing them to meet me at the hospital. I couldn’t bring myself to tell them where Jordan had been hit only that he’d been shot.

Peter halted the car at the emergency entrance. “What’s going to happen to the footage we watched?” I asked, staring into Peter’s gray eyes.

“What footage?” He winked.

My hand flew over my heart. I exhaled.

“Ethan and I protect the streets of Boston. I wouldn’t let anything bad happen to him.”

I leaned over, kissing Peter on the cheek. “Thank you, Peter.”

“No. problem.”

I reached for the door handle.
