Hector continued, “I’ll give her medication to help with the water in her lungs and something to help her sleep. She should rest for a few days to fully recover.”

“Good.”

He packed up his supplies and left the room, closing the door behind him. I sat beside Sofiya, gently holding her hand, tracing lines on her palm with my thumb. Leaning forward, I pressed a soft kiss on her forehead.

“Now you’re safe,” I whispered before standing up. I couldn’t stay here. Every glance at her intensified my guilt. I needed to act fast.

I grabbed fresh clothes and headed to the shower. The warm water eased my muscles, but thoughts of Sofiya haunted me. The image of her in the dark lake, illuminated by moonlight, tormented me.

After showering, I dressed quickly, retrieving my gun from my coat. Glancing back at Sofiya, fragile and vulnerable on the bed, I felt a surge of protectiveness. With my gun in hand, I left the room, my mind consumed by thoughts of vengeance.

As I stormed through the darkened hallways of the house, my anger blazing like wildfire, I finally reached the porch where Andrei and Dimitri lounged and smoked without a care in the world. They both jumped to their feet, startled, when they saw me.

I didn’t even notice Alexsei leaning against the wall until he said in an amused voice, “Here comes the wolf.”

Without wasting any time, I pointed my gun at Dimitri’s right arm and pulled the trigger, then did the same for Andrei. They winced and yelled loudly as the bullets hit them.

“That’s for being fucking stupid.”

They both stumbled back, clutching their arms in pain. I didn’t stick around to hear their curses or apologies. Frankly, I didn’t give a fuck. Storming past them, I headed straight for the kitchen, searching for Dasha. Alexsei was right behind me, his footsteps matching mine.

“How’s your girl?”

I ignored him, my mind consumed by rage. I found Dasha in the kitchen, sitting at the table with a cup of tea. She looked up at me as I entered, her eyes widening in surprise at the sight of my gun.

“What happened?” she asked, concern etched on her face.

I walked towards her and leveled my gun at her head.

“Gde vy byli segodnya? Where were you today?”

As I stood there with my gun trained on Dasha’s head, a cold fury built inside me.

There was no way Marina could have known I wasn’t home unless someone in the house had tipped her off. The thought of a snitch living among us made me furious.

Every fiber of my being was on high alert, ready to explode at the slightest provocation.

I couldn’t trust anyone, not even those I had known for years. Fuck! Who could it be?

One thing was certain: I would find out who the rat was, and they would pay. I would track them down one by one, and they would regret ever crossing me. No rat would be safe under this roof, not while I was in charge.

“I—I,” she stammered.

“Answer me!” I yelled and pressed the gun harder against her head, ready to pull the trigger.

Dasha’s eyes darted around, seeking escape, but finding none. Trapped, her voice faltered. “I—I cleaned the basement, like you asked.”

“The whole fucking day? Dasha?—”

Alexsei cut in, brow furrowed. “How did Marina know Volk wasn’t here?”

Dasha paled. “Marina came here?”

“Yes, and she pushed Sofiya into a fucking frozen lake!” I said through gritted teeth.

Dasha’s eyes widened in horror, stumbling backward and nearly tripping over a nearby chair. “W-Where’s Sofiya?”

Ignoring her question, I pressed on, “You get it, right? There’s a fucking rat in this house. And you,” I jabbed the gun under her chin, “are the only one who knew I wasn’t here. So, did you inform Marina?”
