“Hurry up, Hector needs to check on her,” I said, my thumb feeling her weak and slow heartbeat. I’d already texted Hector, our former doctor turned Silas ally. He was the one who had extracted the bullet from my leg a few nights ago.

“Da,” Dve replied, his eyes focused on the road.

“Marina was nowhere to be found. That fucking bitch,” Alexsei spat, taking a large bite of cake. Dve and I both shot him sharp looks. “What? I’m starving! You dragged me away just as I was about to have my pre-flight meal. And, by the way,” he turned to me with narrowed eyes, “it was first class.”

I rolled my eyes.

“Anyway, I found this on the kitchen counter,” Alexsei said, handing me a small piece of paper.

I unfolded the note.

I can't wait to see you soon, my love ??.

My anger boiled over as I read the note again. Without a second thought, I crumpled it into a tight ball and hurled it out the window with all the force I could muster.

“How much longer?”

“Only a few kilometers,” Dve replied, pressing harder on the gas as the rain picked up.

“Calm down,” Alexsei interjected. “She’s alright, just a little cold.”

I reached for my gun, pointing it directly at Alexsei. “Zatknis’.”

He rolled his eyes and leaned back in his seat, licking the last remnants of cake off his fingers. “Well, well, well. Volk’s smitten. I never thought I’d see the day.”

“I’m not—” I started to protest, but Sofiya’s sobs filled the car, cutting me off mid-sentence. My anger dissipated instantly as I turned my attention to her, my heart sinking at the sight of her trembling body.

I quickly lowered my gun and gently raised her chin with my knuckles. Her face was pale, her lips a light shade of blue, and her eyes were closed. She continued to shiver and clack her teeth as tears streamed down her face.

“You okay, dorogaya? Where does it hurt?” I asked, my voice softening with concern.

Alexsei’s chuckle cut through the silence once more. I shot him a look full of hatred, but he remained unfazed. Fucking bastard.

I refocused my attention on Sofiya, who remained silent, her quiet sobs piercing through me more painfully with each passing moment.

As soon as Dve parked the car in front of the house, I jumped out and scooped her up in my arms. My jacket was the only thing protecting her from the rain, and I shot a menacing look at the guards as I passed them by. They both lowered their heads.

Hector was lounging in the living room, but he quickly trailed behind me as I rushed up the stairs. I carried Sofiya straight to my bedroom and gently laid her on the bed.

“Wait outside.”

Without a word, Hector left and closed the door behind him.

I gently removed my jacket from her shaky shoulders and tossed it to the ground, then carefully removed her damp underwear as she cried harder.

“Shh, it’s me,” I murmured, trying to comfort her as best I could. “I just want you to be warm.”

After undressing her, I lifted her gently in my arms and laid her back on the bed, covering her with blankets and tucking her in.

I called for Hector. He re-entered the room and put his bag on the floor beside the bed.

As he examined her, my frustration grew. I anxiously watched as he checked her heartbeat and blood pressure, shining a light into her eyes. I paced back and forth in the room, my fists clenched tightly at my sides, as I waited for him to finish.

Marina had just signed her death sentence. The second I laid eyes on her, she’d be six feet under.

“She’s in shock, but physically she’s okay. Her heartbeat and blood pressure are stable, but she may have a bit of water in her lungs,” Hector said, facing me with a serious expression, his voice calm and professional.

My frustration melted away as his words sank in, and I let out a relieved breath.
