Terror filled Dasha’s eyes, tears streaming. “No, I swear, I didn’t tell anyone. Please, Volk!”

“You better not be lying to me,” I snarled. “If I find out you had anything to do with this, I’ll make sure you regret it for the rest of your miserable life.”

Shoving her away, I stormed out. I needed a damn drink, now.

Making a beeline for the library, I poured myself a hefty shot of straight vodka, savoring the burn as it went down. Flopping onto the plush sofa, I let the warmth of the fireplace ease the adrenaline rush.

Alexsei and Dve joined me soon after, their silence echoing my own inner chaos. We sat in front of the fire, lost in our own thoughts. But the reality of Igor’s impending arrival yanked me back. Cursing under my breath, I grappled with a weighty decision. Do I spill everything to Igor and watch him kill Sofiya right in front of me, or do I keep my mouth shut and betray his trust?

I grunted in frustration, the dilemma overwhelming.

Dve broke the silence with a pointed question, “Igor’s on his way. What’s the plan with Vlad?”

I shot him a dark look, realizing I hadn’t given them orders about Vlad amidst everything else. Damn it. Sofiya’s got my head twisted, and all I can think about is her safety.

“I think you should invite Vlad for dinner, meet your future father-in-law,” Alexsei chuckled, lighting a cigar and taking a long drag. “It’ll be cute.”

I rolled my eyes, downing another swig of vodka.

Cute wasn’t the word for Vlad.

“Remind me why you’re still here?”

Alexsei sighed. “You brought me here, remember? I told you I had a plane to catch, but you?—”

“If you don’t want a broken nose, shut up.”

With a smirk, Alexsei raised his hands in surrender. “Alright, alright.,” he said, taking another long drag from his cigar, the smoke curling between us.

Alexsei and I had our differences, but nothing could break the bond we shared. We’d been through hell and back together, always having each other’s backs.

Thinking about his loss hit me hard.

Losing a child was something no parent should ever have to endure.

While I didn’t agree with everything he did, I understood his pain. It’s a pain that never really goes away.

Dve cleared his throat, breaking the tension. “What do you want us to do about Vlad?”

I paused, gathering my thoughts. “Have him brought to the basement in the morning. I’m gonna–”

“Off to see your damsel in distress, are you?” Alexsei cut me off, smoke trailing from his nostrils as he chuckled.

I rolled my eyes and flicked him.

Annoyance simmered inside me as I walked out of the room.

Pushing the door open quietly, my eyes immediately landed on Sofiya, fast asleep in my bed. My heart swelled as I gently stroked her cheek.

Watching her breathe slowly and steadily relaxed me.

I slowly undressed, leaving only my boxer shorts on, and climbed into bed with her, spooning her from behind.

Wrapping my arm around her waist, I pulled her closer, sharing my warmth as I closed my eyes and drifted away.

?

In my restless sleep, I dreamed of soft kisses on my neck and whispered words of love. Just as I drifted deeper, a hand touched my shoulder, waking me up.
