"My husband is currently unavailable, Mr. Díaz. As my man said, I can take your number and have him call you back at his earliest convenience." I plastered another one of those fake smiles on my face. "Now, if there is nothing else?"

"Who do you think you are speaking to me like that?"

I almost laughed at the man's indignation. "I'm Delancy Díaz. I thought we already established that."

I knew from the things everyone said that Roberto Díaz was supposed to be the big scary boogeyman, but from the way he was sputtering I was having a hard time taking him seriously. He was just so ridiculous.

"Get out of my way," the man snarled as he tried to push past me.

"This isn't Columbia, Mr. Díaz," I said as I pushed right back, forcing the man back out onto the doorstep. "Entering someone's home against their will is called breaking and entering and you go to jail for that." I tilted my head slightly. "Kind of like your grandson did."

"You!" he snapped. "You were the one that had him arrested, aren't you?"

"Yes, I did," I said proudly with a small smirk. "And I will do the same to you if you don't get off my property."

"This property belongs to the Díaz family, not you."

"And see, that is where you are wrong. This house was purchased by my husband."

"And he is part of the Díaz family, which means everything he owns belongs to me."

I rolled my eyes because come on. This guy was a little loose in the belfry. "Nothing he owns belongs to you. Nothing."

I don't know why I was standing there having this conversation with Alejandro's grandfather. For one, it was a stupid conversation. For two, this guy was an idiot and he was starting to piss me off. And for three, it was a stupid conversation.

Yeah, mentioning that twice seemed right.

"You have no power here, Mr. Díaz. This is New York, not Columbia. You have no power here, no say in anything that happens here, and you certainly can't tell me what to do. I, however, have every right and I am telling you to go away before I call the cops."

As stupid as this conversation was, it was even stupider to stand there when the guy pulled a gun and pointed it at me. For a moment, I wondered if he would actually pull the trigger, and then I saw the crazy in his eyes and knew he would.

Before I could slam the door shut, Díaz pulled the trigger and a bullet slammed into my arm, spinning me around. I stumbled a couple of steps before my guard caught me.

Fuck, that hurt!

Chapter Twenty-Three

~ Alejandro ~

I ground my teeth together as I stared down at Hernandez's dead body. Disgusting white foam like liquid pooled next to his open mouth. It was pretty clear what had happened.

I glanced at the four guards that had been assigned to watch him, my eyes narrowing. "Why was he not searched?"

"He was searched, Jefe," one of the guards said. "We think he had the cyanide capsule inside his mouth. He chewed down on it before we could stop him."

The fact that the dead man's hands were still tied behind him backed up that assumption. He couldn't have put anything in his mouth with his hands bound. We wouldn't be getting any more information out of Hernandez, but he wouldn't be trying to kill us either.

My grandfather was going to blow a gasket.

"Take care of the body and—" My head snapped toward the door leading into the house. "Was that a gunshot?"

Had someone new arrived to try and kill us?

I took off running toward the main part of the house without saying a word to anyone. Still, I could hear footsteps behind me and knew someone was following me.

I assumed it was Hugo. He knew me. He knew I wouldn't leave a situation like the one in the garage without a good reason. My good reason was the gunshot and a panicked need to know where my husband was.

I couldn't bring myself to be surprised when I ran into the foray and saw my grandfather standing there with a gun in his hand. I knew he would show up eventually.
