“Thank you.” I slipped it on. “Okay, let’s head into Milo’s room. See you in a bit, Daisy.”

She waved us off. She was going to have it easy today with only two patients. Two had been discharged yesterday and it was blissfully quiet.

“I asked her to wait to see Milo until someone was with him so he didn’t get scared he’d be with a stranger.”

Easton placed his large hand delicately on my shoulder, and damned if the touch didn’t flutter down to the pit of my stomach…okay, lower.

“I appreciate you, Finch.”

I opened the door and Milo beamed the second he saw his sister, who rushed to his bed and engulfed him in a hug.

“I missed you, loser!”

He laughed. “Missed you too, dork.”

I glanced at Easton and could only see his eyes, but there was no doubt he was smiling.

“You all can take masks off in here.” I slipped mine off and put it into my pocket. It felt special…Okay, maybe I was, in fact, the dork here.

Tru and Milo were talking a mile a minute when Daisy waltzed in.

“Hey, Kooper family and Finch.”

She walked over to the whiteboard and filled out her name.

Milo’s brows scrunched and he looked at me, then at his dad, and finally over to Daisy.

“Are you my nurse now?”

“I am. My name is Daisy, and I’ll be caring for you until five this evening.”

“I’ll return after that.” I rushed in before Milo could get scared.

Technically I wasn’t on tonight; I was off for the next two days. I’d never felt the need to jump in like this, and Daisy’s eyes widened. No doubt she’d seen that I wasn’t the night nurse on file.

“With those cookies?” Milo’s worried face morphed into a serene expression.

“A promise made is a promise kept.”

“Okay, I’ll just take Milo’s vitals and all that fun stuff and leave you all to it.” Daisy did her thing, and I started for the door.

“Are you leaving?” Tru asked.

“He must be tired, Tru. Let him go rest.” Easton mouthed, I’m sorry.

“I do have to get home to rest and make cookies. I’ll be back, though. Don’t worry.”

I said my good-byes, happiness bubbling in my stomach all the way to my car and to my little house. I had the ingredients to make the cookies for Milo and was so lost in my head over my excitement that I missed the warning.

“Good morning, Brother.”

The charred odor froze me in place. Had I been paying attention, I’d have realized he was here.

“Why are you here, Arachnis?”

He was glamoured, but likely only because he was ordered to be by our father. He hated humans but never wanted the chaos that came with exposing his true form in front of them. Only if he craved the chaos and consequence would he ever attempt it.

“There was a shift at home.” He cocked his head, his black hair cascaded to the side. “Are you falling in love with a human, Finch?”
