I wasn’t in love with anyone, but even I realized I was getting attached to the Kooper family.

“No, just a sweet kid in need of some help.”

He hummed, his dark eyes narrowing. “See it stays that way…You know the rules.”

“I do. Now get off my property.”

His laugh sounded like nails scraping glass, and I maneuvered to avoid him and to get to my front door.

“I don’t care if you break them, Little Brother.” He spun so fast, his hand clamping around my throat as he slammed me against my front door. “Because when you do, I get to break you.”

He released me and, with the breeze, he disappeared.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Easton

After Finch left, Tru, Milo, and I hung out, trying to pretend we weren’t where we were. I was able to schedule a week off work, hoping in that time they’d be able to assess Milo and get answers. So far, nothing.

Halfway through our movie, Dr. Perry came in with two other white coats.

“Good afternoon.” It was easy to see she was smiling under her mask. “This is Dr. Grant; he’s the head of pediatric oncology, and this is Dr. Bay; she specializes in hematology.”

A man in his forties and a woman likely in her thirties both greeted first Milo, then me and Tru.

“Nice to meet you.” I didn’t mean it—who wants to meet specialists?

“How are you feeling, Milo?” Dr. Perry gently squeezed his hand.

“Okay, can I go home now?”

“I’m certainly trying to make that happen.” She cocked her head to the side. “I’m going to step outside with your dad, and the four of us are going to go over all your results…It’s a lot of boring stuff, and it looks like you’re watching an awesome movie.”

“Yeah, have you seen it?”

She shook her head. “Nope, but I’m gonna add it to my list.”

She motioned for me to follow her, and all of us moved to the hallway.

“What’s wrong?” If it were good news, I’d have thought they’d have said it right in front of my kids.

“That’s the thing; we don’t know. All our tests are coming back as expected for someone having an autoimmune deficiency. We were able to rule out a lot of big ones like leukemia, thankfully.”

“Thank God.”

“Mr. Kooper.” Dr. Bay tucked a strand of her red hair behind her ear. “There are a few more things we’d like to do, with your approval.”

“I’d need to hear what they are first.”

“The first thing we’d like to do is a simple ultrasound on Milo to view his liver and spleen. When I did my exam in the ER, I noticed his spleen was enlarged. The ultrasound will give me measurements.”

I didn’t see anything wrong with that; it would be painless. “That’s fine.”

“The other thing is trickier.” Dr. Perry cleared her throat. “We’d like to perform a bone marrow biopsy on Milo.”

I opened my mouth to…well, freak out, but Dr. Grant spoke for the first time.

“Mr. Kooper, I’ve found that parents and patients panic when they hear that until they’ve been given all the facts. If you’ll allow me to explain why we’d like to do this, perhaps it’ll calm you.”
