“The sought-after Finch! Oh wow, it’s great to meet you. I’ve heard many doctors and nurses praise how amazing you are with patients.”

“We all have our strengths; putting others at ease is mine.”

“Fair enough. I’m off to check in with my patients.”

“Are you in Milo’s room today?”

“I am.”

“Can you do me a favor and wait for me to return to tell him you’ll be his day nurse? I want to be there, so he doesn’t get scared.”

“No problem.”

“Oh! One more thing.”

She chuckled. “Yes?”

“I got the okay from Dr. Perry for Milo’s sister, Tru, to see him this morning. I wanted to let you know in case she and her dad arrive while I’m gone.”

She read her tablet, tapping it a few times. “Oh, yeah. Says it right here—she’s cleared to enter his room.”

“Oh, good. Gimme a few.”

I clocked out and, as quickly as possible, changed into my street clothes in the locker room. It took me close to half an hour, and Daisy was just greeting Easton and Tru upon my return.

“I’m Daisy, I’ll be Milo’s nurse for the day.”

“Is Finch in Milo’s room?”

“I’m right here.”

Daisy had seen me, but Easton and Tru hadn’t, and they both turned. Tru had the same green eyes as her dad but other than that, she didn’t resemble him much. She probably took after her mother.

“Sorry, I had to clock out and change.”

“Your hair is amazing!” Tru’s eyes lit up in awe. “It’s so pretty.”

“Thank you.” I made a show of patting it.

“No need to apologize, Finch. I can’t thank you enough for staying with him all night.” Easton stepped forward, and he was even more gorgeous in the morning.

“Milo was a piece of cake. I got paid to hang out with a cool kid.”

“Can I go in and see him?” Tru asked.

“Sure thing.” Daisy handed her a mask, which technically she should have had on upon entering the ward. But from what I saw, there were only two kids on this floor as of this morning.

“Going lax on the masking?” I motioned to her face, which was currently maskless. I noted she had a dimple when she smiled and it was quite pleasant.

“So are you.” She quirked a brow.

“Oh, fudge muffins, you’re right.” I’d taken it off before I’d changed and had forgotten to put it on again.

“Fudge muffins?” Easton laughed and it was a deep, delicious sound.

“I don’t swear.” I playfully swatted his chest, which was probably unprofessional, and damn he was toned.

“Here.” He handed me a mask that had the FPFD firefighter logo.
