“I see.”

“What is it like in El Sourial?” Emma asked. Kiro sighed.

“Woman, you really do talk a lot,” he said. “It’s a warm country.”

Emma burst into laughter. “Is that it?” she asked him. Kiro shrugged his shoulders.

“It’s warm and beautiful,” he added. Emma smiled. Kiro wasn’t much of a talker.

“If I may ask, why did you decide to come and live in Dallas?” She had been wondering why he lived in Dallas. After all, he was the crown prince of El Sourial.

“Besada Oils needs to be run by someone capable and trustworthy.”

“You haven’t found someone like that, so you decided to do it yourself?”

“Yes.”

“What happens when you become king?”

“Then I will find someone else to do it.”

Emma and Kiro talked as the rest of the evening progressed. Emma did most of the talking. Kiro wasn’t much of a talker, but he at least answered her questions. When it was time to have dinner, Kiro and Emma sat with some of the other guests. Oddly, Emma felt normal sitting next to Kiro. She had been nervous about it but when the time came, she was quite comfortable sitting next to him. It was as if she had done it thousands of times before.

The time she had been dreading finally came. It was time for the auction. She watched the first woman go on stage. Sheila introduced her and then the men raised their paddles as they bid on her. Her highest bid was $5,000. Emma was pretty shocked. How could someone pay that much just to go on a date with her? Then she remembered that a lot of rich people attended the gala.

Emma watched the women go on stage one by one until it was her turn. She looked at the door and contemplated bolting out of the room. She shook her head and got up. She slowly walked to the stage. She hoped that at least one person would bid for her. She didn’t want to stand there with no one bidding for her. At the same time, she worried about going on a date with a complete stranger.

Sheila introduced Emma. “Bidding will start at $200.” She said. For a moment there was silence in the room. Emma’s cheeks turned red as her fear materialized. One man lifted up his paddle to bid on Emma.

So I will only have one bid and it will be the lowest at $200, Emma thought to herself. Another man raised his paddle. The two men bid on her until they reached $1,400.

“The bid is at $1,400. Going once, twice—” Before Sheila finished speaking, Kiro lifted his paddle.

“$20,000,” he said. Emma’s eyes flew wide open. She had not expected him to bid on her at all. The thought hadn’t even crossed her mind. Everyone in the room gasped and looked at Kiro.

“Does anyone have any higher bids?” Sheila asked. “The final bid is $20,000 by Sheikh Kiro Besada. This concludes our auction.”
