Chapter 13

Emma

“How was the charity dinner?” Cynthia asked Emma when she arrived home.

“It was good,” Emma replied. Mia walked into Emma’s room and threw herself on her bed.

“How was it?” Mia asked her.

“It was fine,” Emma replied as she took off her shoes.

“I heard such charity events cost like $2,000 a ticket,” said Cynthia. Emma turned and looked at her wide-eyed.

“Do they really?” Emma asked her.

“Yes.”

“Wow.”

“You’re working with the really rich people now.”

“Not really.”

“What was the food like?” Mia asked.

“Fine,” Emma replied.

“Just fine?”

Emma nodded as she took her earrings off. She slipped out of her dress and got on her bed. “Move,” she said to Mia.

“You’re not even going to wear your pajamas?” Cynthia asked.

“I’m not bothered,” Emma replied.

“Was the ball not good? You’re not talking as much,” said Mia.

“It was fine. I’m just tired.”

“Did you see any handsome men?” Cynthia asked. Emma lay in her bed facing the ceiling.

“I wasn’t really looking at that,” she replied.

“How could you not? This was your opportunity to find a handsome rich man,” said Cynthia. Mia burst into laughter.

“By now you should know that our older sister doesn’t have dating skills,” Mia teased. The three sisters laughed. Emma sat up.

“Actually, there was an auction,” she said to them. “Men bid on women to win dates with them.”

“What?” Cynthia and Mia spat out in unison.

“Yes, and I received the highest bid of $20,000.”

“What?” her sisters said at the same time again.

“Yes, and I have to go on the date tomorrow.”

“This is shocking.” Cynthia ran her hand through her sandy blond hair. Emma smiled and nodded.
