Chapter 12

Emma

Emma felt nervous as she walked towards the sheikh. She had never been to such an event before. She never got the opportunity to dress up in a cocktail dress. Her life involved going to the university, working part-time jobs and hanging out with her friends and family at gatherings and in town. She never went to black-tie events.

Kiro was speaking with someone. He was wearing a black tuxedo. His jet-black hair was parted at the sides. He had a clean shave. He looked so handsome. Emma felt even more nervous as she walked towards him because he was staring at her. His face gave nothing away. She couldn’t tell if he was staring at her because she looked good or because she didn’t.

“Good evening, sheikh,” Emma greeted him.

“Hello Emma,” he replied.

“Hello sir,” she said to the man who was speaking with the sheikh. “I hope that I’m not interrupting your conversation.”

“Not at all,” the man replied with a smile. He looked at the sheikh. “Excuse me for a moment,” he said to him before he walked off. Kiro didn’t even respond. He just kept looking at Emma.

“I’ve never been to an event like this. I hope I’m dressed appropriately,” she said. It was the only thing she could think of saying. Kiro’s gaze made her feel shy and nervous.

“I guess it’s fine,” he replied. Emma nodded. She looked around the room. There were so many guests. They were dressed in expensive clothing and jewelry.

“Sheikh Besada,” a woman dressed in black said as she approached them. “It’s so good to see you.” Kiro greeted her with a kiss on both cheeks.

“How have you been?” he asked her.

“I’ve been well. Who is the young lady you’re with?” She looked at Emma.

“This is Emma. We work together,” Kiro said to her. He looked at Emma. “Emma, this is Sheila. She organizes this event every year.”

“Hello Emma.” Sheila extended her hand for a handshake. Emma shook it with a smile.

“It’s nice to meet you,” said Emma. Sheila looked at Emma from head to toe.

“She’s beautiful. I would like to include her in the auction.”

Emma raised her eyebrows. “What auction?” she asked. Kiro slipped his hands in his pockets.

“As you please,” he said to Sheila. Emma gave Sheila a questioning look.

“We have some ladies up for auction. All proceeds go to the charity of course,” Sheila explained to Emma.

“The women are put up for auction?” Emma looked surprised. Sheila smiled gently.

“It’s all in good fun. The men bid on a woman. The highest bidder can take her out for a date.”

“Hmm, interesting.” That made Emma nervous. She didn’t want to be part of the auction. What if no one bid on her? It would be so embarrassing. She had never been that popular with men. She had had two boyfriends in her life, and the relationships had not lasted more than four months.

“Don’t worry, dear,” Sheila said as she touched Emma’s arm. It was as if she knew what Emma was worried about. Sheila walked off and left Emma with the sheikh.

“I don’t want to be part of the auction,” she said to the sheikh.

“It’s too late now,” Kiro said to her. Emma laced her fingers together.

“Did you drive here?”

Emma looked at Kiro. “Yes, I drove in the car you bought me,” she said. A smirk appeared on Kiro’s face. It was as if he had won something. “Buses aren’t frequent from my town. I need to drive. As you had my car towed, I had no choice,” she added.

“Which town did you say you were from?” Kiro asked.

“Duncan Valley. It’s a very small town, the kind where everyone knows each other.”
