“How?”

“Brimir was a primordial being. The crystal was encased in his sword and is the only piece remaining. If it’s shattered, the world as we know it will end. An ice age of unprecedented accounts will sweep over the land, killing everything in its path.”

“Oh, my god,” I stare at him in disbelief.

“Why would the humans want it?”

“They don’t understand its power.” Ty cups my cheek with his hand. “Thank you for saving me.”

I smile wide. “I did that, didn’t I? You’ll have to explain later what I did.”

He kisses my forehead, bringing chill bumps to the surface. “Can you take us to the crystal?”

I close my eyes and begin moving. The closer I get, the pulse crescendos. I stop, turning toward him. “It’s in the building.”

“Are you sure?” I nod, continuing to move. Ty’s large hand wraps around my shoulder, stopping our movement.

I open my eyes to see I’m standing in front of a set of stairs. Tilting my head to the ceiling, the pulse gets even stronger. “It’s up there.”

He follows close behind as we continue to ascend until there’s no room left to climb. The pulse is so loud that my entire body is throbbing in tempo with the sound. “We’re close,” I whisper.

The only thing in front of us is a door leading to the roof of the warehouse. “Why would it be on the roof?”

“Because that’s where the helicopter is,” Emma’s voice says from behind. She raises a weapon that looks more like a bazooka than a gun and points it straight at the two of us.

“Open the door,” she demands.

“Don’t open the door,” Ty answers. “She’s going to kill you no matter what. We might as well make it hard on her.”

Emma smiles. “I see who the brains of your relationship is.” She takes a moment to take in every inch of Ty, ending with an approving smirk. “You chose well, Piper. I bet that hurt your tiny virgin vagina.”

“God, you’re gross.”

“Open. The. Door,” she repeats. “If not, I’ll kill him. This thing I’m holding will burn him to a crisp in less than a second.”

“Don’t listen to her, Piper. She can’t kill me.”

“1,” Emma begins counting. “2.” She aims the weapon straight at Ty. “3.” The weapon releases a spray of fire, heading straight toward Ty.

“Stop!” I scream, and time listens. Time stops moving, and everything around me freezes, including the spray of fire heading straight toward Ty.

I step back, trying to figure out what happened. Both Emma and Ty are frozen in place. There is no sound, no drips of water, nothing. The sounds that accompany everyday life are gone, replaced by the starkness of silence.

Moving in front of Ty, I slide him away from the beam of fire heading toward him. I move behind Emma. The belt she’s wearing is strapped with equipment resembling something from the military. I grab a pair of handcuffs from her and tighten them around her wrists and the metal railing of the stairs.

I don’t know how much time remains in whatever I’ve done, but I head back to the rooftop exit and find the helicopter several feet off the ground. The silence around me is deafening as I board the copter. Sitting in the middle of the open cabin is the familiar blue crystal that I’ve known my entire life.

The pulse of the stone hums as I open the glass container and touch the last remaining piece of my father. The instant my skin makes contact, I’m transported to another time and place.

I’m no longer on top of a warehouse in Chicago. Instead, I’m standing on top of a mountain, surrounded by ice. Cold wind whips around me, whipping the ice-blue dress I’m wearing around me. “What happened?” I ask no one.

“Piper,” a deep voice says from behind. I turn, seeing a man taller than Ty. His hair is as blonde as mine and hangs halfway down his back. A long white beard covers his chin, hanging down nearly as long as his hair. I know who he is without asking.

“Brimir?”

“It’s me, my darling. I’m so proud of you.” He stretches his long arms to the side, and I instantly run to him, wrapping my arms around his waist.

The warmth that radiates from him amidst the frozen surroundings, brings comfort. I can’t fight the tears that fall, covering my face with stains.
