“Farbauti,” Emma says, lowering to one knee. “My king.”

“I am not your king,” his booming voice answers. “Give Brimir’s daughter the crystal.”

“I…I can’t do that.”

“You have no choice. I will kill you without hesitation.”

From somewhere behind, a flame of fire shoots through Ty, making his face contort in pain.”

Emma stands. “There’s a reason you’re the only one left.” Ty falls to one knee as the fire continues to burn through him.

“Stop!” I scream. “You’re killing him.”

“That’s the whole point. Before humans could control fire, there were hundreds of giants, killing humans for fun. Now we’re the ones in charge.”

“He’s not like that,” I argue.

Emma turns toward me. “You’re smarter than that, Piper. He’s killed millions of humans in his lifetime. Do you think you’re special? You’re nothing more than a piece of ass. One of many.”

Ty’s eyes shut as the fire spreads throughout his body. Emma turns back toward the dying giant. “This isn’t an ordinary fire, Farbauti. It’s the fire of the gods.” She moves closer to him. “Oh, what’s the matter, big boy? Does it hurt?”

Ty’s eyes open, turning toward me. “I’m sorry, Piper.” His voice is softer than before. “Use your power.”

The combination of his voice and seeing him in pain strikes something deep inside me. A rumbling begins in my core, slowly working its way up. My body suddenly feels like it’s been plugged into a light socket. Every pore, every freckle, every hair on my body is alive.

“Stop,” I warn once more. The voice that leaves my body doesn’t sound human. Emma turns toward me, confused. Without anything more than a thought, I send a blast of energy straight into Emma, throwing her thirty feet backward.

I turn my attention to the machine causing Ty’s pain. In the back corner, I find the cause. A laser and its operator. I send a thought in their direction, causing the laser to explode instantly, no doubt killing its operator on contact.

Ty collapses to the floor, breathing hard. Out of nowhere, a group of humans drops from the sides of the room, resembling something from a movie. They’re running straight toward us.

I close my eyes, envisioning them falling like dominos. I open my eyes to find them collapsing to the floor as a giant ball of ice knocks them off their feet and engulfs them inside.

Ty is back on his feet, his wound healing quickly. Each of us scans the room for threats, finding nothing more than a scattering of bodies and metal.

“We have to get out of here,” he grunts, wrapping a hand around me and lifting me to his face.

“Not without the crystal,” I demand.

“Look around, Piper. There’s no one left to tell us where it is.”

“I don’t need anyone to tell me. I feel it. It’s calling me.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. It’s not far.”

Ty sets me back on the floor and shifts from the ice giant made of nightmares to the familiar form of Ty. I focus on keeping my eyes even with his and quickly lose the battle. “You’re naked,” I announce with a smile.

“Yeah. They don’t make clothes to fit my true size.” He covers himself, bringing very untimely disappointment to my mind.

“Here,” I hand him my sweater. He wraps it around his waist, hiding the view.

“Are you sure you feel the crystal?” he changes the subject.

“Yes. I don’t know how to explain it, but I feel it. It’s like a low-frequency pulse if that makes sense.”

“It does. There’s no time to waste. If that crystal is in the wrong hands, it can do more harm than good.”
