I seized the moment, slid into the driver's seat, and put the key in the ignition. With the engine roaring, I accelerated and left the men in my dust.

The thrill of freedom and the weight of danger hung in the air as I meandered through the busy streets. I yanked out my cell phone and quickly dialed Nik's number while my heart pounded like a drum in my chest.

My heart sank when he didn't answer. Questions swirled around in my head. Why didn't he pick up? Doubt and fear clouded my mind, was he somehow involved in all this?

I pushed the car to its limits with every turn, skillfully avoiding the relentless pursuit I found myself in. The sound of screeching tires and the honking of their vehicles filled my ears, but I refused to let fear overwhelm me.

As I sped through a narrow street, two cars suddenly came toward me and surrounded me from both exits. Panic shot through my veins and my chest tightened. Their menacing presence was suffocating me, and I knew I had no way out.

A voice that seemed to come from the leader of the group of four rang through the chaos. “Get out of the car, sweetheart,” the man sneered, his voice dripping with sadistic satisfaction. “Or we open fire.”

I hesitantly opened the car door, my limbs trembling with fear. As I stepped into the dimly lit alley, I met the cold, penetrating gaze of the leader. His eyes bored into mine, filled with malice and dominance.

He approached me slowly. “You thought you could outrun us, didn't you?” He sneered, his voice full of venom. “Now you're at our mercy.”

He grabbed me by the arm, his grip was firm and painful. The sharp pain shot through my body, but I refused to let him see my fear.

Then he yanked me by the hair and forced me to look him in the eye. “You're nothing more than a pawn in our game, you’re useless. I could kill you right here and now.”

At that moment, I felt the weight of my mortality pressing down on me. The realization that this could be my last breath consumed me, and a wave of terror coursed through my veins. Every fiber of my being screamed for survival as I fought to keep my composure.

The man’s sadistic laughter echoed through the alley and strengthened my will to survive. I refused to let him break me. With all the strength I had left, I mustered the courage to look him in the eye, my eyes blazing with defiance.

As the engines of their cars roared again and the tires squealed over the asphalt, panic shot through my veins. I struggled against the restraints and my heart hammered in my chest as the man pushed me toward his vehicle, threatening to whisk me away to an unknown fate.

Just when all hope seemed lost, the familiar roar of a car, which I recognized as Nik’s, pulled up alongside the enemy cars, attracting everyone’s attention as it came to a halt with a loud screech.

“Nik.” I whispered under my breath and a sudden relief came over me, making my eyes water.

“It’s Wolkov! Wolkov is here!”

The trembling voices of the other men by the cars buzzed like an angry beehive. I yelped slightly as the head bruiser yanked at my hair again and growled at the men.

“Well, he’s not a god, damn him, shoot the-”

Without hesitation, Nikolai reached into his holster and drew his slim black pistol with skillful precision. Time seemed to slow down as he fired a series of shots, each one sounding like a thunderclap in the dimly lit street.

One ... two ... three ... The enemy fighters fell to the ground, their bodies crumpling in defeat.

My ears rang from the noise, my breath came in gasps and my heart raced. I stared at their lifeless bodies, shaking, and confused, my mind desperately trying to figure out how to free myself from this man’s strong grip.

I watched in awe as my husband moved with deadly grace, striding over men’s bodies without care or remorse, his movements calculated and efficient as he stood before us.

“How dare you lay your hand on my wife?” His loud growl sent a shiver down my spine. His eyes were bloodshot with rage, and I couldn’t imagine the terror the thug must have been feeling at that moment.

“I’m not afraid of you!” The man’s tone, however, exposed the truth.

“I should slowly put an end to you and make sure that you suffer the consequences for touching what’s mine and that you will remember it even in hell!!”

The thug let go of my hair and gently pushed me aside. His tone sounded pleading as he raised his hands in defeat.

“Look, man, you can have her back, we were only following orders, you know how it is. Please just this once, let me-”

Without warning, Nikolai's fingers tightened around the trigger again and the sound of a shot echoed through the air. As if in slow motion, the bullet found its target and carelessly pierced the man's forehead. At last, his lifeless body slumped to the ground and a cold silence fell over the area.

For a moment, my eyes stared at the four lumps, the remnants of the violent encounter. The reality of what had just happened threatened to engulf me and drag me into a vortex of horror and despair. My stomach churned at the sight of the bodies strewn across the floor, my legs gave way and I fell to my knees.

How could I ever reconcile the gratitude I felt toward Nikolai with the cruel scene before me? But just as I felt I was about to lose myself in the darkness, his voice, soft and gentle, broke through the chaos.
