“Ashley ...”

His voice was like a lifeline pulling me back from the abyss. I turned my head toward him, and my eyes found comfort in his warm, emerald gaze. His strong arms encircled me, lifted me from the ground and tugged me against the firmness of his body.

Surrounded by violence and death, Nikolai's affection and protection were the anchor that kept me safe. I took a deep breath and allowed his presence to soothe my trembling soul.

The way he had expertly neutralized the men without hesitation, his laser focus, and the lengths he was willing to go to protect me and our child made me realize that he stood by his words.

“Nik, you saved me,” I gasped in awe, as I finally found the strength to speak.

As he held me close, all my worries seemed to disappear from the world.

“I will always protect you, my Ashley.”

Chapter 18 - Nikolai

Ashley lay on the hospital bed. My heartbeat rushed in my ears. I sat next to her, angry with myself for letting this happen. I had promised to protect her and our unborn child at all costs. Yet this attack took place in my home. These dogs had the guts to kidnap my wife.

I raged within myself. The life my wife carried was almost extinguished because I wasn't there. This child would be my legacy, the heir to all my achievements. It would be the last time something so serious would happen to them, to my wife and my child.

Savic was already on the case, and I knew he would find out who was behind it, even if I had a wild guess. I expected him to call me as soon as he found out something. Oh, the things I would do to whoever was responsible for this.

I already had several punishments in mind, how I could make him suffer. Death would be a mercy compared to what he deserved. I would not let him off that easily. He would suffer, beg for death, but even death would bend to my will.

I would take everything from him, everything, including his life. The last pair of eyes he would see would be mine. I would send him to hell, and I would do it with a smile on my face.

I would break his spirit, crush his soul, and feed his corpse to my dogs. They would feast on his flesh and drag over his bones.

Even in the afterlife, when he rots in hell, he will always remember who sent him there. He would remember my face, the man who condemned him to eternal damnation.

No one touches my wife and lives! No one!

“It wasn't your fault, Nik,” her voice brought me back to reality and I smiled at her. “I know you're worried about our child.” She rubbed her hand over her belly.

“I'm worried about you too,” I replied.

“We're both fine, okay?” Her smile warmed my heart.

I sighed and said, “I never should have left you alone, Ashley.”

“Hey, don't do that. Don't drive yourself crazy,” she replied, holding my hand. “You were at work, like the businessman you are. That's not your fault.”

The door opened and the doctor came in with a file, which I assumed was the report on her condition.

“How is she, doctor?” I asked and straightened up. “Is she getting better, are there any internal injuries we don't know about? And the child, how is our child?” The words just bubbled out of me.

“There was a minor injury, but I want to assure you that your wife and the baby are fine,” he said.

“Minor injury, what do you mean, doctor?” My eyes widened.

Somehow the doctor found my question funny. He chuckled. I glanced at my wife, and she was giggling on her bed too.

“There's nothing to worry about,” he replied, “During the fall your wife sprained her wrist.”

I looked in her direction again and she raised her bandaged hand in the air as if to ask if I had forgotten so quickly.

Oh, right. Of course.

I faced the doctor and he continued,
