“What are you doing here?”

“I came here to see a client. Aisha told me you were here too.”

“Oh,” she gulped, wondering if she should mention seeing Dev.

Ranveer’s phone rang the same instant.

“I need to take this call.”

“Take it. I'll wait in the parking.”

He agreed.

In the parking lot, there was no sign of Dev or the woman. Where did they go? Who was that woman? Her cap resembled the photo detective Patel had shown them.

“Hey,” Ranveer grabbed her arm. “What happened? You look stressed.” His protective voice emerged as he scanned for what troubled her. “Where is Aisha?” he grumbled, not finding her.

“She's getting the car.”

“What happened with Mohan?”

“His wife is sick, hospitalized. He had to leave.”

Ranveer frowned, unhappy to hear that.

“What do you mean he left? How could he? Why didn't he tell me?”

“He told me because I was available. Don't worry, he left the car in the parking lot for Aisha to drive here.”

Ranveer still wasn't convinced. He didn't want Maya alone even briefly. His enemies could hurt her unnecessarily.

“I thought you'd understand Mohan's problem. Wouldn't you leave work and come to me if I fell that sick?” she asked.

“Shut up,” he growled. Her attempt to lighten his mood irritated him instead. “I'll never let you get sick. Never,” he repeated firmly.

Overwhelmed, Maya rested her head on his chest, letting him hug her close.

Chapter 54

Paradise

Ranveer and Maya had just arrived home together when he told her that they wouldn't be traveling together this evening. She would have to go ahead as scheduled, while he would arrive the next morning.

“Why aren't we going together?” Maya argued.

“Because I have something to finish here before I start.”

“I can wait.”

“No, you need to be there with Daadi and your mother. It's your Mehndi tonight. You cannot miss it. People have been invited for this function, and they need you there. I will reach tomorrow morning.”

“Tomorrow is the wedding, Ranveer,” she snapped.

He pulled her closer. She was arguing like a typical wife, and he was not annoyed by it at all.

“I won't be late. I know what it means to us,” he murmured.

She was unhappy. Somehow, him not starting with her today was making her worry. It was a very unusual feeling.
