Rot.

The Sky Watchers were cruel.

They’d dumped me in a chariot with transparent sides pulled by three Yulnicorns. My gown was in tatters, exposing more than I desired in front of these leering angels. Hideous bruises lined my arms, legs, and bare feet, evidence I’d been beaten. I blinked at my condition, numbness creeping in.

I thought of Zhèmson. He’d raced after me, flying as fast as he could. In dismay, I watched as those cords of power visibly drained his strength in a way no angel could. The harder he fought for me, the worse it became. But he never stopped. Then everything turned black. Never in my life had a male fought so hard for me. Not even Father. Without a thought, he let a mistress bring everything our family had to ruin.

Then there was Zhèmrazraèl Briyen the Strong.

An angel I’d betrayed too many times to count over the course of the past year. He’d fallen in love with me and had been willing to fight with his own curse just to try to save me. My eyes fell shut as my heart twisted. I missed Zhèmson with such force, I could barely breathe around it.

“She looks so sad.”

“Maybe we should give her a little fun.”

“You would settle so easily for faeretheth scum, Avarien bastard.”

It did something cruel to me knowing the angels had their native language, but spoke in the common tongue just to vex me.

A snap of reins crackled. The Yulnicorns launched into a trot. My stomach churned as the chariot sped up. Nausea bubbled inside of me. I covered my mouth so I wouldn’t vomit while I waited for the chariot to come to a stop. When it did, the world felt like it balanced on an incline. I slammed into the back of the chariot as my body rolled. Someone yanked me out with a powerful fist and dumped me on the ground. Before I could stop myself, I bent over and vomited. It got all over the Domenents’ boots, my feet, and the edges of my torn gown.

“Ällöttätan.”

The angel cursed, grabbing me with brute force, shaking me angrily until my ribs snapped. I screamed, unable to conceal the pain. He slammed me to the ground, my knees cutting into something sharp. I tried to stand, but I was too weak, in too much pain to try. A hard kick in my ribs sent me flying before I hit hard earth and rolled. Another kick to my back made me see red.

“This is the filth that deceived you, Kira?”

Cackles rang out. Gruff voices let out a slew of insults at the Sky Watcher. A large hand fisted my hair and dragged me into a massive structure. The moment we were inside, darkness enveloped me.

What was it Kiranon said would happen if I failed? He’d give me naked as a pet to the Sky Watchers? I trembled. My throat swelled. My mouth filled with ash.

“Where am I?” I croaked. I shuddered at the sound.

“Your new home, my pretty whore.” A beat. “The Saelus Prison.”

I jerked upright, hyperventilating. The Saelus Prison? What was it the fae always said about it in hushed whispers?

“Once the angels throw you in, you’ll beg the gods for swift death before they ever let you back out.”

Something in me snapped. I screamed, lashing out. I kicked with my feet, swiping with my arms. The grip on me loosened its hold. Good. I bent low, swiveled, and made to run. Rough hands grabbed me before throwing me aggressively across an open space. My body slammed into a wall of stone. I seized with agony, choking on excruciating pain.

My vision swam as I fought to stand. Delirious and desperate, I tried again, refusing to go down without a fight, but the effort was futile. I didn’t know who grabbed me. Kiranon? Another Sky Watcher?

Hands fisted my breasts and squeezed hard before slamming me against the stone. Hot liquid seeped out of my back, staining my gown.

“Keep it up,” a hot breath warned in my ear, “and no matter how loud you scream, how hard you fight, how much you beg, I’ll buck the burning rot out of you until you break.”

“Careful.” A dark chuckle. I recognized Kiranon’s voice in the darkness. “She’s the dogs’ favorite.”

“Exactly why she’s my new pet.”

I wept. Satisfied I’d stop resisting, the Sky Watcher rammed his hips against mine, forcing me to feel his hardness before pulling away. I knew without him saying a word. That would be my only warning.

I opened my eyes, adjusting to the dim light. I was in a cavern. An endless, innumerable number of Sky Watchers littered the space. At the center, the cavern went up into the air and also down into a bottomless pit. Embedded into the walls were cave openings. Down each opening was a long hall that led deep into the stony structure.

This had to be what hell looked like.

Distracted, I didn’t realize what was happening until shackles were around my wrists, my ankles, and my waist. Locked away like a common prisoner, I was drug by both female and male Sky Watchers.
