“Ah, your wife send you out?”

He looked at her and couldn’t help butwonder if she was inquiring if he was married or not.

“Don’t have a wife,”

“Oh.”

“Nor do I have a girlfriend,” headded.

“I wasn’t—”

“Do you?”

“Do I what?” she asked.

“Have a boyfriend or a girlfriend?”

“Oh, no, I don’t have, uh, either.”

He didn’t know why he asked that, but it wasgood to know.

“Did you find your sister?” he asked.

“My sister?” She frowned, nibbling her lip.“Ah, yes, yes, we did. We found my sister.” She let out a littlechuckle. “Yeah, it wasn’t too hard to find her. She’d been shacked up with one of the wolfboys until he got bored, and then she appeared.” She breathed inquite rapidly. “Did you enjoy your drinking?”

“Yeah, I did.”

Eloise laughed. “You’re not much for smalltalk, are you?”

“No, I’m not.” He glanced down athis cart. “Don’t likeshopping either.”

“Why don’t you get one of your pack to doit?” Eloise asked, putting the boxed cake mix into hercart.

“I don’t believe in allowing others to domy dirty work for me, and besides, it’s my turn,” he said.

Eloise smiled at him. “It’s my turn aswell. As it happens, Ilove to shop, especially for groceries.”

“You do?” he asked, frowning.

“Yeah, I know it’s a little strange, but I don’t know, I like it.I get to see what’s on sale, and what looks nice, and it helps toorganize what we’re going to cook.”

“Who do you live with?” he asked, expecting her to say shelived someplace with other young people.

“My mom, my sister when she’s not having sexwith random wolves, and me,” Eloise said. “You?”

“My pack.”

“Is it a big pack?”

“Some days it feels like it’s too big.”

She began to chuckle.

“Where’s your dad?” he asked.

“Died after I was born. It was an accident on a building site. It’s why we ended up moving to No Wolves Road. Mom lived here whenshe was a kid, left to be with Dad, and then we moved backhere.”

“You like it here?” he asked.
