I can’t take my eyes off of Millie. There is something that is waking up within her soul as she watches the sun rise further up in the sky. Her eyes are bright blue with excitement. Her passion for life is intoxicating, and I crave more of it. I crave more of her. She still has her hand in mine giving it a little squeeze.

She tears her eyes away from the skyline and meets my gaze. “Thank you for bringing me here.”

“Thank you for coming.” I twirl a loose curl around the forefinger of my free hand and give it a slight tug before placing it behind her ear. A soft pink colors her cheeks as she looks away.

Millie gives my hand a small squeeze.

“We should probably head back. I’m sure everyone has noticed that I’m not home by now. Don’t want them to worry.” She lightly pulls my arm towards the car.

I nod.

We drive back to her place in a comfortable silence, fingers intertwined. As I pull up to the house she looks at me and speaks for the first time since we got in the car. “Thank you for today. Breakfast was almost as wonderful as that view.”

“You’re welcome.” I hesitate. Then look into her eyes that are now an ocean blue. I could swim in those eyes forever. “Millie… ”

There’s a moment. All I’d have to do is—

“Do you want to come in?” Millie blurts. Not ready to go back to my empty condo, I agree.

We walk through the door, and Kiersten is sitting on the couch eating a bowl of cereal. She eyes us and then looks down at our hands. “Well, hello… ”

“Hey, Kiersten,” Millie says nonchalantly.

“And where have you two been so early this morning?” There is amusement in her voice. I like her.

“We went to breakfast.”

Kiersten lifts an inquisitive eyebrow.

“It was a bit of a drive. Had an early start,” I add.

“Umm-hmm.” A smile tugs at the corners of her lips.

Kiersten goes back to her cereal and whatever show she had on. When she finishes, she gets up and washes her dishes. After disappearing down the hallway, she comes back with her book bag and keys.

“I have a study group and then work so I’ll see you guys later.”

“Okay,” says Millie. “Is anyone else up?”

“Not home,” Kiersten responds. “Amara and Duncan left shortly before you got here. They have brunch with his parents. And Tori isn’t home yet.”

Millie’s eyes furrow. “What is going on with her lately?”

“She met up with Jonathan last night. She probably just stayed at his place.”

“You’re probably right.” Millie’s face relaxes, but her shoulders are still tense.

“You two have fun.” Kiersten waggles her eyebrows at us.

“Bye!” Millie shouts as she buries her face in her hands, letting go of mine for the first time since we entered the room.

Millie and I sit on the couch as she starts to channel surf. She finally stops on a movie I don’t recognize and curls up with a blanket leaning against me. As we sit, I can feel myself finally relaxing enough that I start to yawn. The fact that I’ve been up for close to 30 hours starts to hit me. I strain to keep my eyes open and place my arm on the back of the sofa. Millie leans more into me, and I must have closed my eyes because next thing I know I hear, “What in the actual—What is going on here?!”

Even with my eyes shut, there is no denying that voice. It’s my brother.
