“You must think I’m super boring.”

“I don’t think you’re boring,” Millie says with a more serious tone, making me believe her sincerity.

“You have a funny way of showing it.” I return her nudge.

“Truce?” She turns to face me, offering her pinky finger.

“Truce,” I agree, accepting her pinky promise.

“How did you find this place?”

“Your dad brought me here back when we were kids.”

“My dad?”

“Yeah. It was shortly after we had moved in, and I was having a hard time. He came into my room one morning and told me to get in the car. So I did. We didn’t talk the whole way, just sat and listened to the radio, neither one of us said a word until we were sitting in the booth.” I pause. “I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone that. I don’t think even Ben knows.”

“That sounds like my dad,” Millie says smiling. “Always looking out for everyone.”

“He’s a good guy.”

“He’s the best, but I’m also pretty biased.”

Having breakfast with Millie is the most natural thing in the world. We talk about anything and everything. Before we know it, we’ve been sitting in our booth for a couple hours, and the diner’s usual Sunday morning crowd is starting to file in the doors.

“Shall we?” I say motioning toward the door.

“We probably should,” Millie agrees as she watches the crowd grow larger. We vacate our booth, and I go to the counter to pay for our meals.

“You up for something else before we head back?” I’m not ready for this to be over. She nods in agreement. Millie heads for the car, but I grab her hand and lead her in the opposite direction. Confused, she gives me an inquisitive look.

“It’s just up here,” I explain. I’m still holding her hand, but she hasn’t pulled away, so I keep going.

“What is?”

“You’ll see”

“Or you could just tell me,” She coaxes.

“Nope.”

“You’re no fun.”

“So you’ve said.” I give her a sly smile.

“I just don’t see why you can’t—oh wow!” I watch her as she takes in the view from the outlook. “This is amazing!”

“I told you it was worth it.”

“You sure did,” she says as she gives my hand a squeeze.

I take a chance and start rubbing circles on her palm with my thumb. She surprises me by intertwining our fingers.

“I found this path a few years after your dad and I first started coming here. Whenever life was getting to be too much, I would get in the car and just drive, and I’d usually end up here.”

“It’s beautiful.” She squeezes my hand again.

“I haven’t been back here in a long time.” I don’t know why, but I feel like I can share everything with Millie. I want to share everything with her. I’ve never wanted to share my thoughts or feelings with anyone. I hardly share them with myself. This realization should freak me out, but as with everything else, Millie just makes everything make sense, and I want more of that in my life. I need more of that in my life.
