“Hello, Owen,” I say.

“Don’t believe everything he tells you. He will try and lead you astray.” Owen leans forward and kisses me on the cheek.

“Why do you always have to be so negative? You’re looking better. This is a good day.” Kasper kisses his other cheek.

“I’m dying. I have good and bad days, but that remains the same,” Owen says in a dry tone.

Kasper frowns.

“Hey, Owen, no need to be gloomy.” I kiss his cheek again.

“You do make everything brighter, Maris. Is that a mermaid thing?” Owen asks.

“No, that’s a Maris thing,” Kasper says.

“You’re too kind to me. Both of you are.”

“He gets the kisses, though,” Kasper jokes.

“You turned my kisses down.”

There’s a knock at the door, interrupting our conversation. Kasper pulls me into the bedroom.

“Hello,” Owen says when he opens the door.

“We’re looking for Kyle or Kasper Columbo.”

“What’s this about, Officer?” My pulse starts to race. They can’t take Kasper.

“Can we come in?”

“Now’s not a good time.” Owen seems to be keeping his cool, and I’m grateful someone is.

“Why not?”

“Do you have a search warrant?”

“No. We just want a friendly chat.”

“I’m sorry. I can’t help you.” The door closes.

After a few minutes, we go back into the living room.

“They had your picture. What trouble have you got yourself into now?”

“My past had to catch up with me at some point. I’ll try not to draw any more attention to myself while we find the rest of the jug. We’re heading to Brazil tomorrow, so we’ll be out of the way.”

“I’m glad you won’t be here when they come back. When this is all over, we’ll go back to England and turn over an honest leaf.”

“Yes. That’s what I want too.” They hug.

When this is all over, will I have found what I was looking for? Will I have learnt anything, or will I go back to my palace under the sea and continue to feel like something is missing?
