Chapter Fourteen

IF AN AQUARIUS EVER CARED ABOUT SOMEONE, IT’S LIKELY THEY STILL DO

Ryn

“Put on the suit and try not to speak when we get there.”

I do what Isaac wants. “Why do we need to wear these clothes?” I ask.

“We’re going to pretend we’re after some girls for a new club.”

“That’s sick, even by your standards.” The thought makes my stomach queasy.

“Do you have a better idea of how to get her back?”

“No.”

“Then let’s go.”

A short car journey later, we’re at a desolate warehouse. I brush my hair back and follow Isaac inside. A group of men in suits waits inside. I look around, hoping to see Pasha or any of the girls they have here, but they must be somewhere else.

“Mr Anderson. Nice to see you again,” one of the men says to Isaac. This isn’t the first time he’s been here, and I’m not surprised.

“Where are you storing the merchandise?”

“We have some lovely ladies here,” he says.

“But not all?” I ask. Isaac gives me a warning look.

“We’ve just made a big shipment that’s on its way to Mexico.”

Panic rises within me. “I need to see the women now.”

“Keep your cool, Ryn. Mr Black will have what you’re looking for.” He turns to give the guy his full attention. “His wife recently passed away, and he’s looking to replace her with someone who looks similar.”

“She must have been really special.”

I clench my fist but push my anger back down. I need to get Pasha and get out of here before I do something stupid. “Let’s see what you have,” I say.

“Right this way, men.” He leads us into a cooler area behind hanging meat hooks. There are trays of ice for fish on the sides, and I shudder. One of Mr Black’s men opens the cooler, and we follow him inside. The girls are all huddled together, but as I glance at each face, I realise Pasha isn’t here.

“When did the other girls leave?” I ask, trying to hold my temper.

“About twenty minutes ago.”

“Bring them back now.”

“I can get a custom order if you give me a picture.”

“How about you give us the registration of the truck, and if we pick something, we’ll pay double,” Isaac says.

“I want someone today,” I say, trying to play along, but honestly, I’m struggling to hold it together. Pasha is on her way to Mexico, probably in a cooler like this. What if she transforms into a mermaid when she gets too cold?

“I’ll give you the GPS details, but I’ll want three times the price.”

“It’s going to cost you,” Isaac says to me.

I close my eyes and slowly breathe out of my nose. “Fine. Let’s just get this done.”
