“Yeah, I came right from work.”

Max nods, observing me as my eyes continue to roam over the gym, searching for something that’s clearly not here.

“Haven’t heard from Ty?” Max asks.

I scoff. “No.”

His brows draw together. “Not even after his appointment? It was hours ago… I was hoping you heard from him.”

Worry settles as I look into Max’s eyes, seeing the same emotion in them. “No…”

He steps towards me. “Maybe it was good news, so he went to work?”

“He probably would have come here…” I trail off, trying to think of what he would do if he received the all clear from the doctor. But I don’t know. Because he hasn’t texted more than a single word to me in days, so I don’t know what he’s thinking.

Or maybe it was bad news and he’s out there making some poor decisions right now.

“I’m going to go check his work, and home,” I say, backing up towards the door and trying not to look as panicked as I feel.

Max nods. “Good idea. Want me to come with you?”

“No,” I shake my head. “I’m good.”

“Ok,” he says, uncertainty lacing his tone. “Let me know.”

“I will.”

I turn around and head back out of the gym.

Fuck.

I should have been more forceful with him and made him deal with this. But he was pissing me off, so I gave him the space, hoping he would come around when we both cooled off.

As I pull into the parking lot of his work, I look around for his car. But I don’t see it.

An older man at the desk in the main office looks up with a smile as I enter. “Hi, can I help you?”

“Hey,” I say, turning my head as the door into the garage opens, and another guy comes in, laying some papers on the desk. “I’m Luca. I… train with Ty.”

The guy at the desk smiles as his eyes roam over my bruised face. “I see that,” he says with a light chuckle. “Nice to meet you. I’m Bill. This is Tim, one of our mechanics.” He gestures to the other guy behind him.

“Is he here?” I ask, getting right into it, unable to exchange pleasantries right now.

Bill’s brows draw together. “No, he left hours ago.”

“So, he was here?” I ask, glancing between him and Tim.

Tim eyes me and steps forward, a worried look crossing his face.

“Yeah, he was working this morning,” Bill says slowly.

My heart is pounding. “And he didn’t come back?”

“Is he ok?” Tim asks.

“I don’t know.” I run a hand through my hair and look out into the garage. There’s another guy out there working, and I see an empty space that must be Ty’s.

“He wasn’t himself today,” Tim says, pulling my attention back to him. “Withdrawn, sharp… angry.”
