‘Don’t say his name!’ The cop was gone and in his place was someone else. ‘You killed him; you don’t get to say his name.’

‘Who?’ she breathed.

Tom's eyes were ablaze, his face ashen. ‘Your boyfriend is a fucking cop killer.’

The dirty cop. She remembered Alex telling her he’d killed a dirty cop.

‘You worked together?’

Her question seemed to raise the tension in the room even higher. Neither man looked at her as understanding dawned. ‘Oh… your partner.’

‘How’d a gay cop manage to get to the rank of Detective Sergeant?’ Not a trace of compassion snuck into Alex’s words.

‘My private life is no one’s business,’ Tom spat.

‘The taskforce?’ asked Sarah.

‘It’s real. They wouldn’t have you, isn’t that right, Nable?’

‘Tom?’ Sarah turned to face him again, bristling against the uncomfortable truth that had already planted itself in her gut. Tom kept his hatred fixed on Alex.

‘There was never any deal,’ Alex persisted. ‘We were never going home to help the police.’

The two men seemed out of reach, outside of the glass box she found herself locked in. The scene playing out was so recognizable to her now – life hanging in the balance and regardless of how loudly she screamed and shouted for answers, to be heard, no one paid any attention. She wanted to sit but the truth turned her insides to lead, compressing her belly and overflowing like molten lava down her legs, rooting her in place. Acid rose uncomfortably in her mouth.

‘Why didn’t you just kill me when you found me?’ Alex took another step inside the room.

‘Too easy, I wanted to make youreallypay.’

Tom jerked his head at Sarah. The movement was like a lightning strike, shocking her out of her private contemplation of the lies she had pegged all her hopes on. Her mind tried to rearrange the pieces, all this new information a puzzle she was trying to make sense of.

‘You don’t care about anyone except her,’ Tom snarled. ‘I wanted to see you crack apart from the inside as you watched her die.’

The hot lava turned to ice in her bones as his meaning penetrated.

‘Why the delay? You could have killed her back at the hotel.’ Alex wasn’t moved by Tom’s confirmation. ‘You thought I might actually trust you, make it that much worse for me?’

‘I thought she would eventually convince you to trust me. I needed more time.’

‘You knew The Devils had found us again,’ Sarah said, trying to salvage some sense of honor in Tom. ‘You must still have contacts with the police, otherwise how would you have known?’

Neither of them looked at her. Neither spoke. She clenched her hands together, fighting off the answer that echoed silently around her. She shook her head. Please don’t…

‘You just took up where Aaron left off.’

‘Fuck you, Riley. Aaron was a good man, a good cop.’

‘He was dirty.’

Tom lunged forward, only to be held up by the subtle movement reinforcing Alex’s gun pointed at his head.

‘You were working with The Devils,’ whispered Sarah. ‘All this time… ’

For the first time since Alex had appeared like a ghost in the doorway of the safe house, he looked at her. ‘Are you okay?’

She nodded, her mind racing to catch up with all this new information.

‘Sarah, he lied to you from the start.’
