She turned her back on Tom and stepped into Alex’s line of vision. ‘You’d think I’d be better at picking that by now.’

‘Baby—’

She raised her hand to cut him off.

‘I just want to know one thing.’

Alex returned his gaze to Tom, assuming her question to be directed there.

‘Alex, how do you know all of this?’

‘The Devils.’

She shook her head. ‘What do you mean?’

‘I had a conversation with their new enforcer and we struck a deal.’

‘What kind of deal?’ She could barely get the words out.

‘I convinced them that Nable had played them, that we had a deal with the DPP. They agreed to let us go if… ’ His voice trailed off.

She stared at him, her head moving from side to side in disbelief. No, there couldn’t be any more bloodshed.

‘Sarah, this is our way out.’

His hands weren’t even shaking. He’s so good at this, taking another’s life. If she didn’t know him, she would be terrified. Maybe she should be terrified. Of him. Alex was steady, like a rock. He showed no fear, no anxiety. This was just another day in the office. She knew she didn’t fear him. She fearedforhim.

‘Please move, baby.’ Did he want her permission?

She shook her head. ‘You know I can’t do that.’

His eyes implored her.

‘I can’t let you kill him.’

‘It can all end here.’

‘I agree. But not like this.’ She took a step closer to Alex.

‘I just want us to be free.’

Sarah could see the pain on his face, imagining the deal he’d struck with himself. Promising himself it would be the last time.

‘Killing Tom won’t free us, Alex.’ She smiled at him.’ If you want to be free, put down your gun.’

‘They’ll come after us.’ His voice was softer.

‘Probably. But while we keep fighting them on their terms, keep trying to find a way out of violence with violence, we aren’t free.’

The slightest breath of air behind her broke through the bubble, reminding her they weren’t alone. Tom’s movement seemed to slow down, as if time had remained on hold and he was now forcing it to move forward again.

She felt the cool, rounded edge of his gun at her temple as his arm snaked around her shoulders and across her throat, threatening to constrict the air from flowing.

‘Don’t do this, Tom,' she whispered, closing her eyes.

‘You’re losing your edge, Hollywood.’

Fear turned Sarah’s insides to ice, and her legs threatened to give out from under her. There’s no way out this time.
